When Nanny or Child is Sick, Which Parent Takes Off Work?

Even nannies get sick days! When a caretaker calls in and has to cancel unexpectedly, mom and dad have to figure out who will tend to their tots. The same thing happens when baby is ailing and can't attend day care. If your family encounters such a situation, which parent stays home?

How about when the kids are sick, I'm a stay at home mom and I get sick?! It's happened now about 2X in my 8 years as a parent where I've been so sick my husband has actually had to stay home to care for the kids, and one of those times the baby was only a couple months old so I still had to feed her. I'm really thankful that he did take those few days for me, but it's hard to do when he rarely even takes sick days himself because he's not a salaried worker, so he doesn't get any pay when he's off.

It's more often falling to me, but Dad tries to do his part to if his schedule allows. It's fun for him to get some good bonding time in with the kid if possible thanks to these unfortunate circumstances.

Most the time, whichever parent the kid is staying with at the time takes off work. If Dad is out of town, though (which is often, especially in winter), it's all me.

When we have kids, it'll be me since I only work eight hours a week and my work is very understanding as everyone else who works there is a mom and has had to call in when their kids are sick.

I can't really vote one way or the other. We assess who has the busier day at work, and then the least busy parent takes the day off.
