Which Lice Remedy Did You Use?

Dealing with lice can be a hair-raising experience, but parents often differ on the method to get rid of them. Some moms and dads swear by the traditional over-the-counter shampoos and solutions. Weary of chemicals, others take a more natural approach with olive oil, mayonnaise, or tea tree oil.

lol, i like the flat iron idea. i wonder if swimming would get rid of them? so awful, i dread the day one of my girls omes home with them. this is a place my girls classmates have used http://www.lovebugslice.com/

My stepdaughter had lice last school year and it was awful. We used the drug store brands, but it took a few times to get rid of them completely. Ultimately I think what was most effective was my flat iron. I figured if I couldn't kill them with chemicals, I'd fry the little suckers.

All the studies show that the pesticide-based remedies are not effective on North American lice (they are in Europe still, apparently). Lice here have apparently "evolved" into super-lice. So, if you use the pesticide-based stuff you'll likely have to use it a couple of times. My kids suffered on and off for months before I gave up on those remedies.My childrens' school has "lice kits" that they make available to parents which have the good metal combs (finer than the plastic ones), and it involves mixing unpasteurized vinegar into a creme rinse. Was pretty effective. I also did follow-up by using teatree oil shampoo for a while.

i'd lean towards a natural remedy first... and then if that failed i'd shave his lil heed probably!

I haven't had to, but I think if it comes up, it'll depend on the child. Like I said in the other thread, if my boys are ok with head-shaving (extremely close buzzing), I'd want to do that first to save them and me the whole ordeal of drowning their head in chemicals or oil. However, if they didn't want to, then we'd take it from there and discuss it with our ped.One friend had great success with Rid and another had great sucess with olive oil.
