What Do You Know About Colic?

Whenever a baby is fussy and prone to crying everyone starts talking about colic. What is it exactly? A baby is considered colic if she is between three weeks and three months and cries excessively.

we too thought Gray had colic but he had misdiagnosed GERD. The swaddling helped so much. I was really nervous once he started getting bigger and busting out of his swaddle. He does fine without it now. Last week we were walking to breakfast and passed a guy with a crying newborn standing on his porch trying to get the little guy to calm down. An hour later on our walk back we see the same guy who now has the baby in a stroller with it still screaming. I felt so bad for him. I should take him my happiest baby DVD ;-)

Even I need white noise to sleep well. Unfortunately all my kids hated being swaddled, although the middle one tolerated it slightly longer than his siblings. The oldest and youngest both screamed from birth if they were swaddled, the middle one was ok with until he was about two weeks old.

Yep, the 5 "s's" are amazing. My son is 7 months now and still sleeps better with his legs swaddled. And when we thought he was colicky, it really helped us get him to stop crying (turns out he just need different formula and medicine, but it still helped). We still do the white noise in his room, too.

kellys... we had that book... and i swear that the swaddling was the BEST thing... he looooved being swaddled and slept thru the night from 3 months on! it really IS a terrific book... also helpful was the white noise trick... in the car... i had a station that didnt come in PROGRAMMED, when/if he fussed in the car... a lil static put him to sleep and settled him down EVERY TIME (always amazed me that worked)!

as the mother of a colicy baby (it lasted about 6 weeks in our house), i highly recommend the "happiest baby on the block". we watched a video about it in a parenting class and his techniques made a huge difference. they didn't always work (and there's only so long you can rock and shush a baby until your arms fall off and you pass out) but they saved our sanity on multiple occasions.

I know that older siblings of these babies are highly confused and NOT PLEASED. ... speaking as an older sibling, of course. My mom frequently relates stories of the 3 year old me complaining about my sister and being confused about why she just would NOT stop crying.

The reason I know a lot about colic, is because my first born had colic! It was a very long 5 months. Another cause of colic is the use of forceps when the baby is delivered.

The doctors told me my son was colicky, but in fact he had reflux, which my husband and I figured out (and mostly fixed). I was glad we were able to do something because colic just sounds terrible.
