Are You a Weeper?

Seeing your infant in pain can be devastating for newborn parents. I've heard of many a mother that can't bear to watch her babe get his first round of shots so she makes the dad do the dirty work.

Having always been the tough skinned mama, I recently cried with my daughter at one of her doctor's visits for the first time in her two years of life. The doctor handed us both tissues and I treated both of us to ice cream after.

Do you get teary eyed when your wee one weeps?

mstrauss... i also had to take our son (one month) to the hospital for some tests, and they had to do an iv... (and an mri that they had to sedate him for)it was DEVASTATING but i did the same thing you did, held him & sang to him & talked to him & comforted him....(thankfully it was only three times to redo his iv i dont know how you were able to do FIFTEEN uggghh, i'm chokin up thinking about it). thankfully he's fine also... but i held it all together for him, (didn't even know i had that kind of strength)

it depends......for instance when my middle son fell and bonked his head, he had to get staples in the back of his noggin. well...they wanted me to hold him down while they did it. and they didn't even numb it!! it would of dragged the process out further anyways. i couldn't do it...i had to have a nurse come in. i stood in the hallways crying when i first heard that loud scream of pain. i almost knocked another lady down rushing to get back into the room. i never, ever want to do that again.

always i just recently got used to being in the same room i still wont watch, the worst was when they blew out all my sons veins and they had to go to his forehead

I don't melt down in front of them or anything, but I also don't mind if they see me cry. I want them to know it's ok to cry when something hurts or when they just feel bad, and that I sympathize. I don't moan and scream to God for letting it happen though.

parents are weird. i use to work for a clinic, mostly with kids, and some parents had some demented reactions to when i would gives shots and their kids would cry...some of them actually laughed or would say "stop being a pussy" to their kids.

My son was in the hospital when he was 2 months old with a high fever (poor thing) and I was so surprised at myself that I stayed so strong and didn't cry. My husband, on the other hand, was the one doing all the crying. It was sweet. They had to give him an IV and it took more than 15 need pokes to get there because he was so small and I just helped hold my son down and talked to him. The nurses even said to me "we wish all moms could be like this" since they said that so many moms would leave the room or cry through the whole thing. I just wanted to stay strong for him, even though he didn't understand what was going on. He is much better now!

I don't generally cry when he cries, but I do cry at everything else slightly moving (TV, stuff I read, etc.).

I only get upset when I'm upset over something else and maybe I snap at her or else I'm already crying. She'll start crying and tell me that she's sorry and to please be happy.

I feel terrible when they cry, but my natural reaction is to laugh. It is horrible, but it just comes out. As a child, a few times my dad had some scary injuries and all I could do was laugh. I don't think it's funny at all either, obviously. If they hurt themselves I just turn the other way while my husband rushes in, and after 20 seconds or so I'm able to compose myself.

I chose sometimes. When Alana was first born, she had really bad jaundice so they every day for the 1st week of her life I had to bring her to the hospital so they could prick her foot. I use to cry every time. I suppose after all that my skin grew thick so now when she gets her shots I just try and comfort her as much as I can.

I totally agree with you, roxtarchic. I have and will always keep a brave face for my son's sake. If I start to get a little weepy, I keep it to myself or let it out later.

i try not to get upset in front of him.... i think they tune right into your emotions, so i try to keep an even keel... and then i'll just fall apart afterwards... i'm sorry to hear about your daughters reaction greggie... hope she feels better. our lil guy has to get a shot this wk... uggghhhh

Also, I was one who didn't see immunizations with my first son until he was a year old. I didn't "make" my husband do it, he just knew it was hard for me so he offered to take it on.

Sometimes, yes. Like this week my daughter's having a terrible reaction to her immunizations. She's absolutely miserable and I've been in tears feeling bad for her quite a few times over the last few days. Essentially all I've done since Sat is sit in my chair with her sleeping or crying in my lap. (Luckily the laptop fits under her. ;) ) Ok, that was too much info, but the short answer is yeah... sometimes.
