The Many Faces of a Mother, Which Do You Consider Yourself?

Back in the day, family structure used to be pretty predictable with a husband, a wife, and the couple's children. Over time, the concept of family has taken on many forms and with it changed the idea that most mothers were married. From single mothers (62 percent of LilSugar readers define her as someone who has no help in raising baby) to coparents (those who are both actively, physically, emotionally, and financially present for their children). When it comes to your maternal role, which is the group to which you identify?

I consider myself a single mom; my ex sees her every couple weeks and occasionally he makes his payments... so I guess technically that makes me a coparent but seriously, I potty trained her. I take her to the doctor and care for her when she's sick. I taught her letters & numbers and damn near everything else she knows. He plays with her 3-4 days out of the month. Not to be a bitch, but if we're coparents then I'm 95% and he's 5%. That's so good that you get along well with him Jen, for you and him and most importantly your little one. My ex and I don't even speak, we go between his parents and sometimes people look at me like I'm less of a mother because of it... I hope someday to be civil with him but every chance I've given him he's screwed it up.

It is so rare that both parties are actually mature enough to make it work for the kid after a break-up...I know my dad wasn't able to be an adult around my mom after their divorce. So congrats, Jen on being a great mom! I am in a commited relationship but I raise my daughter on my own for the most part, because her daddy is rarely ever home (he works all day, and sometimes goes without seeing for days!). I get the financial benefits, but he really isn't much of a help around the house (when he gets to see her he is a wonderful father, though...)

That's awesome, Jen -- your daughter will certainly benefit from having parents who may not still be married but work together well to raise her !

Hey, finally, a good term for me! My ex-husband and I are divorced, but we're both still active parents and good partners when it comes to raising our daughter.
