Toy Box: LeapFrog Tag Reading System

If you have a budding reader on your hands, keep your eyes open for LeapFrog’s new Tag Reading System ($50), which hit stores this week. Designed for children ages four to eight, the system features a stylus with a camera in its tip that “reads” the letter, words and symbols on the pages of the 16 books in its library, including favorites like Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, The Little Engine that Could and Olivia ($14 each).

We had the opportunity to test the Tag earlier this month. To see our review, read more.

While I am not a fan of letting technology “read” an entire book to you (as one of the options allows), I enjoyed the system’s ability to read along with a child. I was also taken with some of the system’s special functions, like the stylus' ability to identify objects in a picture and bring them to life by adding voices to the characters and to play interactive games with the users.

LeapFrog bills the Tag as a web-connected system and that may be one of the highlights of the product for adults. Once a new book from the Tag library is purchased, adults must connect the Tag to the computer (it is PC and Mac compatible) to download the book’s audio files. When the Tag is connected to the computer, parents can view their tot’s progress and plan accordingly.

While the price tag on the system is a bit high, it should keep your lil one occupied for some time. The current books in the library are featured below, including Kung Fu Panda: Po's Tasty Training, which is being released in conjunction with the film's debut (its audio features Jack Black's voice).
