Tell Mommy: Your Thoughts on Orgasmic Birth

Bringing sexy back in the delivery room? While lots of women say they are more in touch with their bodies while pregnant, doula, Debra Pascali-Bonaro, takes that concept to an entirely different level encouraging women to enjoy labor to the point of orgasm as their baby births. Couples allowed cameras to roll as delivering mothers climaxed (or came close) in a documentary called, Orgasmic Birth.

In the film, Christina Northrup says, “When the baby’s coming down the birth canal, remember, it’s going through the exact same positions as something going in, the penis going into the vagina, to cause an orgasm."

What is your opinion on this concept?

I remember one TV show, had a character arguing that birth should be sensuous, and used a massage technique... I wondered at the time if we were missing something obvious.

i know it sounds ridiculous but after what i fell was the worst pain experience of my life, even asked the Dr to kill me and save the baby...i had an orgasm. This was after the delivery...i can't remember before or after the sewing up...i think before. I wastotally embarrassed and the only one who noticed was the Dr. She had a crazy look on her face cause she saw everything down there pulsate...and i was so embarrassed i never brought it up. But started researcing and found this site.

Orgasm and childbirth are deeply connected. Oxytocin, the love hormone is present is very high amounts during a natural labor. Oxytocin levels peak right as woman is birthing her baby. When we achieve a true Orgasm we produce strong amounts of you guessed it Oxytocin, AKA the bonding hormone, mothers release oxytocin when breasting

This movie is really not about achieving orgasm during birth, although one woman in the film does do that. It is about understanding the natural hormones that can occur during labor/birth when it is allowed to progress un-impeded by unneccessary interventions. It is actually quite an amazing documentary and I found it very informative. If you simply watch the trailer on their website that is linked to in the OP you can see more of what the movie is really about. I highly reccomend it. Birth really can be a very satisfying, life changing, and amazing experience, and those things are much more easily achieved when a woman is able to labor/birth as naturally as possible.

i felt a lot better when the pushing phase of my labor began since my contractions were so painful. I had natural childbirth and although I can *kind* of see where they're coming from in regards to the delivery feeling good (for me I felt relief while pushing)... but the comment about something coming out feels as good as something going in... that's BS. I don't know about you, but when I'm having sex, I'm not having contractions...

I read somewhere that sexual stimulation can reduce pain. Perhaps the orgasm is induced to reduce the pain of childbirth?

I cant imagine anything that would be less apropriate or wanted at that stage. youre basically comparing a pickle cucumber to a watermelon. Gigantic differnece as far as size, elasticity, pain, etc go. I also wonder, why? Im not uptight or afraid of my sexuality, but why exactly should an orgasim, a sexual feeling, be paired with birthing a baby?

oh for crying out loud...i'm all for natural, drug-free childbirth and for a woman taking charge of the process, but come on. orgasmic birth? really?

while i would have enjoyed an orgasm so much more than the pain of childbirth i just don't see how it is possible... if a lot of people where achieving it i would give it a go (like sign up for a class or something), who wouldn't want pleasure over pain? but again, really i don't see how it is possible; and what a funny class that would be, can you imagine when signing up for birthing classes having the option to sign up for the "big O" class too!
