Tell Mommy: When Did Your Child Start Chatting?

It's only natural for parents to pay attention to their children's developmental milestones and how he or she measures up to playmates. That being said, each child has his or her own pace and in most cases, they catch up or eventually, level out their Olympic speed. A recent study on language emergence has shown that 80 percent of children with language delays at age two will catch up by age seven. Of course that also means one in five "late talkers," stay delayed for a while longer.

I always tell friends how important I think it is to not put your children on a timetable and just enjoy the proud growth and accomplishment moments when they happen. Of course, there are certain milestones — like your child becoming a chatty Cathy — a parent will never forget. When did your child begin completing full sentences and carrying a conversation?

my first (now 10) started talking right on cue at about 10 months, moma, dada, car, kitty, etc. normal gains until about 2, then no gains until 2 1/2 and then slow loss of speech until about 5 when she basically lost all speech (autism).number 2 (now 9), had 10 words at 1 and the same 10 at 2. had me concerned except that she understood everything told to her and could follow a 3 step set of instructions. we put her in pre-school and she was caught up by 2 1/2.number 3 (now 7) was using sign language (which we were not teaching to her, but were attempting to teach to her autistic sister) at 8 months. one day she started signing "more" and "eat" from her car seat. i was shocked. by a year she had more words than i could count and by 1 1/2 was a chatter box. maybe it was because she started going along to her sisters speech therapy sessions at 3 days old and seeing what got rewarded at an early age. but then again, she also speaks german, and can read it too so she may just have an appitude for language.

I guess my husband talked a little bit when he was young but at some point he just stopped talking 100% at 2 and a 1/2. They tested him for everything and didn't know what was wrong. Then one morning when he was well after 3 he came down stairs and said "Mother, today I would like some cereal for breakfast please". They were floored. They figured he just didn't want to figure out the whole speech thing in front of other people and was waiting until he mastered it ;-) I can see the 7 month old doing this. He is coming across as a very serious baby but if you watch him he is working stuff out in that little head of his. The first son was very advanced in his speech skills and did full sentences and would chain multiple sentences together before he was two. He is still this way at 9 and randomly picks up vocab that blows me away.

Is 15 months considered late walking? I was always told the normal range went up to 16 months.

My daughter was an early talker (started about 10 months) and a late walker (15 months). She is 20 months now and is talking up a storm. She's little for her age and has just started climbing and running. Every baby is different.

Ours weren't even classified as late, because the comprehension factors so heavily into it. It's technically "late" talking, but not delayed developmentally. There's such a huge range of what's normal.

My DD had 4-5 words at 18, and not many more at 2. Her pedi sent us in to be tested for autism, learning disabilities, etc. Turns out she was classified as a "natural late talker." (I found out later that most of the babies in our family have shared this trait.) Because she signed to get what she wanted, or used other non-verbal cues, she didn't develop the need to really say much. Her most used words were Momma, Dada, and DagDag (her kitty BFF/Shadow.) She (at 4) is caught up and a bit ahead at this point.

My daughter has pretty much always talked it seems. She talks and is always singing ..for as long as I can remember. She is 2 and 4 months now. She uses up to 4-5 sentences at time. She even can substitute words (like if I tell her "go tell Daddy to quit smoking [outside], she replaces it with Stop, etc..), .. she can spell her name, knows her full name (..knows my name and my husband's name), and is already trying to write her first name - but that's going to take some more time. She even knows a handful of words in Spanish, which is weird because I only know English. She is also counting objects up to five now. She saw two pictures of me side by side on the computer last night and said, "One, Two Mommies". Lmao. For her age, she is extraordinarily bright because I push her since I see her potential. Sometimes, of course, it is like "SHHHHH, I am trying to think!!" -- but really I just love to absorbing how expressive she is and her pronunciations. This is the only time in my life I will be able to hear her little voice this way. :)

Both my boys didn't really say much until they were 2 1/2. Then within six months, they were both "ahead" of the curve.I worried a bit with my first, so we took him into the school district for evaluation. His understood vocabulary was huge for two years old, he just didn't talk much. So we didn't worry at all with the second.

I was concerned why my son was not talking a couple of months after he turned one. He would basically point to the things he wanted. I was recommended to see a speech behavioralist, she tested my son with cards that he pointed to when she asked which picture was what and nodded correctly to yes and no questions. She did notice that me and his did had the "spanglish" thing going on in the office. The speech behavioralist suggested we speak only one language because the spanglish might be confusing for him; and I should consider having my son go to daycare where he can develop his speech. Sure enough, about three weeks after attending daycare he started babbling and then talking clearly. He's ten now and I wish he would stop his yapping for one full day!
