Tell Mommy: What Was Your Biggest Parenting Blunder?

There is no manual for raising children, which means all parents are bound to slip up. From losing your tot in the mall on Black Friday to giving a toddler a Sharpie to doodle with, I've heard hilarious stories. New parents are more apt to fumble, but long time moms and pops are not in the clear either — ever forget it was your day for carpool?

Thank you all for sharing these stories. I think for most moms we try so hard to be perfect that it is really hard to admit when we do something wrong, or heaven forbid we miss something. It's nice to know that we are all human :-) My last blunder happened this past summer on a really hot July day. My barely 6 month old was all sweaty and I handed him an ice cube which he promptly put in his mouth. After about two seconds of him putting it in his mouth it dawned on me that he could choke on it. I instantly freaked and scooped it out of his mouth to which he was now freaking out. My husband was concerned when I gave it to him but didn't say anything because I have a 9 year old from a previous marriage and he thought I knew what I was doing. I have never professed to being a pro and I think I really forgot everything from 9 years ago. Seriously it's like being a new mom all over again.

My biggest blunder was shortly after we got our 3 puppies. We had planned to adopt 2 puppies from the same litter, and my husband fell head over heels in love with a third, so I reluctantly agreed to bring him home as well. Im no stranger to puppies, ive raised dozens of them, but with a 10 month old, 3 puppies was a bit overwhelming. 3 times the poop and pee while potty training. Anyway, i had just rounded them all up and scrubbed up a pile of poop. I still smelled poop and scoured the ENTIRE living and dining room area, and couldnt find anything. Im kind of paranoid about smells and clenliness so i made myself relax. While I was cleaning up her highair an hour later after lunch, she found it, of course. In the 2 seconds it took me to place her dishes in the sink, she had crawled through it, rubbed it all over herself, and eaten it. I came into the dining room to find her working her mouth like she was disgusted. HORRIFYING! Come to find out it was behind a table leg in the shadow, concealing it from me. Never again will I agree to so many puppies at once. It was all I could do not to vomit while I cleaned her up, feeling like the worst parent/pet owner in the world lol.

cherrygirl143 -- I have a similar story! This was only a couple of days ago, and is my worst blunder so far. My 5 month old daughter was playing on the bed, and I was doing my make-up and hair only about a foot away, keeping a close eye on her so she wouldn't roll off. Well my fiance came in and started talking to me, so I turned to talk to him, and as we were talking, out of the corner of my eye I saw her fall to the floor! She landed on a pile of clothes, but I felt HORRIBLE. Poor girl was scared, but she wasn't hurt. I felt awful! She only plays in her pack n' play now while I'm doing my hair!

My first son rolled off the couch as an infant because I wasn't paying attention. He wasn't hurt but I felt like the worst mother ever.

so far in the short 13 months that my little one has been here there has only been one major blunder. i made the mistake of putting my daughter down for a nap with a dirty diaper sitting on the diaper bin. she reached her hand through the slot and grabbed the diaper, then she took out the contents, yes the pooh, and smeared it all over her crib, her clothes, her snuggley toys and oh yes in her mouth!!!! it was awful, poor thing with pooh everywhere! i went in to see what was going on and when i opened the door i just yelled for my husband to come...she was crying while i was trying to get everything in her room clean my husband was holding her and trying to get her clean...he in turn was covered in pooh too. it was so gross! i definitely learned my lesson that day...dirty diapers go IN the bin not ON the bin!

I don't have a child of my own, but my mom had a major blunder when I was a kid. We have a large family with 4 older girls and a much younger brother. When my brother was a baby we lived in the Caribbean. We went to the grocery store one day (which is a big enterprise w/ 5 children)and my infant brother fell asleep in his carseat. We all unloaded when we got home, and no one got him out of his seat. We all assumed someone else had him and put him in his crib. Well 45 minutes later my mom went to wake him up and realized he was still in the car in the hot caribbean sun. He was fine, but very upset. She still can't talk about it to this day, and he is 14 now!

I was babysitting once for a 20-month old and pushed her a little too close to the kitchen island/ counter in her high chair. She only had to push lightly against the counter to rock backward, and I had to do a superman-caliber dive to throw a hand under her head before the chairback hit the floor. She didn't hit her head, but she was freaked out and cried for a few minutes. I was more shaken than she was, there's no Baby Einstein video for adult post- traumatic stress.

My absolute worst parenting moment occurred when my son was just under two... We were alone in the house, he had fallen asleep in his crib. I decided to take a nap on the couch in the livingroom. He decided to wake up, climb out of his crib (which he had never done before), walk across the house, bring a chair FROM THE KITCHEN to the back door, unlock said backdoor, get out, close the door (without waking me up, only yards away, mind you, and I was a new mom, and have always been a LIGHT sleeper)and walk to my father's house (which was next door). I awoke to someone knocking on my front door, standing there with him, asking if he was my child, and that she found him walking down the sidewalk! That was the absolute scariest thing that has ever happened to me. There wasn't anything that I did "wrong"... the house was locked... OMG.. I get sick thinking about it to this day, how it COULD HAVE turned out.

Mine was leaving the food coloring on the kitchen table and then going to take a shower. I wound up with blue floors, blue walls, blue counters and a blue child. Thank GOODNESS he didn't get it on the carpet! He had blue on EVERYTHING. The counters and floors cleaned up pretty quickly, but my poor child was blue for a while.
