Tell Mommy: Did You Have Kids Before Your Siblings?

Having siblings growing up can make for some friendly familial competition. Older children can set an example for younger ones and pave the way when it comes to things like curfews and dating. Sometimes there's sibling rivalry, but there's also using fond memories between brothers and sisters.

As kids get older, it's exciting to see how relationships evolve especially when siblings start families of their own. Being an aunt or uncle is an honor for a brother or sister and may even inspire them to have their own offspring. Tell me, did you have kids before your siblings or was it the other way around?

A few weeks after announcing my pregnancy my younger sister had her own announcement. Her baby is exactly 6 weeks younger than mine. It is so much fun to watch them together.

I'm an only child, so sadly I'm it in my family. My husband has an older brother who has two boys older than my son (even though we were married first). But they live across the county, so we don't see them often. We both come from small families and it looks like our kids will as well.

My husband and I are the oldest of our siblings and the first to have kids. (He's 4.5 months now.) I don't think my kid is going to have any cousins for quite some time. Weird thing is, all my cousins are younger than me and the youngest ones are 2 and 4 years old. So my kid can play with my cousins! =)

I'm the youngest of 4, I'm the only one without kids. My oldest sis is about to have her 4th, my brother has 2, my other sister has 1. I'm not married, but I am in a long term relationship. If we get married soon, I won't be thinking about starting a family for another 5 years or so. By then, I might have 20 nieces and nephews :p I just love being the aunt, but it does get expensive... every birthday and Christmas.

Both Hubs and I are the first of our siblings. He's the youngest, and I'm the oldest. Neither of our brothers are quite there in the family department yet (neither are married).

I'm the first. My little brother hasn't had kids yet (and he better not for a while, because he still has some growing up to do!). My twin brother is gay, and an aspiring doctor and world traveler, so kids don't quite fit into his life plan.

My younger brother had four kids before we had our first (4 kids all under 5). Luckily his youngest is only a few months older then my little girl so she will have a cousin close in age to play with.

I'm on the other end of the spectrum as the first 2 posters. I'm the youngest in my family. My youngest sibling in 10 years older than me, so they all had kids way before me! I was an Aunt by the time I was 5! I LOVED IT! I got to be friends with my 9 nieces and nephews, but have also helped to raise them! I've done the usual babysitting, but I've also been with them for extended periods of time when their parents were away and done the fill in parenting. By the time I had my first baby 7 years ago, I felt very ready. I knew what I was getting into with the sleepless nights, poopy diapers and sick babies. My husband is the oldest in his family and the first to have kids on his side and he was really blown away by things when we had our first. He tells me even now how glad he is to have me as his wife and kids' mother because he knows I've got a good handle on what I'm doing. That being said, we have a lot of fun laughing at his brother and sister. Not in a mean or spitefulw ay, but because we know what they're going through and can laugh at how they think they know what they're doing and how they think they know best, when we can look back and see ourselves in the same place and remember feeling like that sometimes too! We try not to stick our noses into what they do, but will gladly share our experience with them when asked. Same as we still ask my older sisters for advice and guidance and watch their struggles with teens and going into grandparenting and hope to learn for what we'll deal with in a few years time.

Me too. My brother's younger and not even thinking about kids yet. But me and my sister-in-law seem to be on the same schedule. Her 2nd and my 1st are 5 mths apart. And now are 3rds will also be 5 mths apart.

Yep, I'm the first. My brother's not even thinking about children. He and his girlfriend have been dating for 7 years and just moved in together last year. But she's only 22 and they're both still in school. It's okay though, I'm an auntie on my boyfriend's side of the family. He has two sisters and they all became parents in the course of less then 4 years.
