Have You Already Talked About Sex With Your Kids?

Last night, MTV's show, Teen Mom wrapped up its first season with a check-in with Dr. Drew. The girls have done a lot of maturing since we first laid eyes on them in 16 and Pregnant, but they still have a lot of growing up to do. One in 10 American babies is born to a teen mom. The statistics are alarming — babies are having babies. What steps have you taken to make sure your children don't end up in this situation? Have you initiated the birds and bees conversation yet or set the stage for having it in the future?

My mother never gave me 'the talk' because she had always been open about sex with me. It was never this big mystery but something I figured out along the way and she answered any question whenever I had one. That's the way I plan on doing it. She's only 5 months now, so I don't have to worry right now, but I don't want kids in school telling her crap. I want to be the one to give her useful information.

My girl is four... but I plan on discussing the matter when she's 10, or earlier if she gets her period before that. I have always been very honest with her, and plan on telling her, "If you're not comfortable talking to me about birth control, ask an aunt."

I have a girlfriend who just had the talk with her 2 kids over Christmas break. Her son is 8 1/2 and her daughter is 6 1/2. She had a really good book that has everything at their level. We've had parts of the talk with our kids, almost 7, almost 4 and 14 mo's. My almost 7 year old has been asking questions ever since we told him we were having the 14 month old. We gave him very truthful answers using the proper terminology and at a level he understands. He thinks it's a little strange that a penis goes into a vagina to make a baby and that the baby grows in a uterus and then comes out either the vagina or by c-section, but he doesn't question it or think there's something wrong, just doesn't know why someone would want to do that.
