How Much Does a Mom's Education Affect Her Child?

Does how much a mom hits the books have a direct effect on her child? In last night's episode of MTV's Teen Mom, Amber wrestled with the idea of getting her GED instead of her high school diploma. Gary had a hard time understanding why the diploma meant so much to her since he graduated before their daughter, Leah, was born. Meanwhile, Catelynn finished up her senior year, Farrah continued work on her culinary degree, and Maci talked to her counselor about transferring to another college. How much does education play a role in a person's ability to parent?

amber is a nasty person, she treat Gary like dirt she always crying with the faked tear, all she do is complain all the time she never do nothing wrong as she say, i know Gary love his baby but he don't have to take that abuse from her, i was hoping him and that other young lady was going to get together, amber need to see a head doctor, that girl is really crazy

I think that leading by example is the best way to influence kids. A parent has to value education in his own life to be believable when he says it's important to do well in school.

I think how much education a parent has received is huge! My boyfriend was the first in his family (entire) to graduate from high school, and of course his family isn't pushing college. He also took the easiest classes in high school because his mom didn't want to "push him". It sucks I know he is a smart kid, but his family never supports him when it comes to education. =( Totally agree MissSushi! I think the reason why I am doing so good in college is because my parents have always said to me as a child "Grow up, go to college, be rich" basically but in the long run it has helped a TON!

When I was in 6th grade I told my dad I wanted to go to Princeton. He told me I was pretty enough to just get married and I didn't need to go to college. I was crushed, and surprise surprise, ended up dropping out of school at 16 to be a rock star/model. That exposed me to many things and I eventually ended up in the hospital for a week from malnutrition because I'm not naturally built like a model. I luckily got myself straightened out and went back to school, however my three siblings are still floundering. If that is not proof of education being important in life I don't know what is. My son will grow up knowing the importance of education, and at four already loves books since I am also an avid reader.

I've known lots of coworkers who have never read anything but required school reading, and found it astounding. On a lighter note, it alwasy makes me think of the drivers handbook. I am an AVID reader, i read anything I can put my hands on, books, magazines, video game booklets, etc, and reading that was like shoving shards of glass into my eyes. I can't imagine how awful it is for people who hate reading.. haha. Being raised in a household that holds education to a higher rung is obviously incredibly important. Children who grow up seeing their parents "do fine" without an education are much less interested in getting that education themselves, starting from a very early age. It needs to be a priority.

I have to agree with the 1st comment! While education certainly can't hurt, I also do not believe it's the be all end all in parenting. There's a lot to be said for life experiences as well. It's important to strive to give your children everything you can (not in money value) and to give them a better life than you had, but also for everyone to be happy! While I love my children and would love to see them as doctors, lawyers and dentists, if they want to be circus clowns and they can support themselves and are truly happy, I'm not about to argue.

Good parents put their children's needs above their own and strive to nurture and care for the children to the best of their ability. Education doesn't necessarily affect good parenting. But kids raised in a "high print environment" - being read to frequently, having access to reading and writing materials, and observing their parents reading and writing often - are more likely to be enthusiastic readers. Seems like this would be more likely in an educated household, but it's not a given. One guy in my office told me that aside from the books he had to read in college, he has NEVER read a book.
