Did You Teach Your Son to Sit or Stand While Peeing?

Pop a squat or stand and stream? Tots decide when they are ready to give up the diaper, but parents figure out how their boys will learn to pee. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests training boys to sit on the potty so there is no confusion between urination and bowel movements. Many moms prefer to teach their sons to stand so they can pee like their fathers, and do so faster. How did you train your son to use the toilet?

I Hate Boys AND DON'T Even Know why they Exist In Our World- Let Alone Why They PEE Standing- They SUCK!!

We taught my son to sit and now, a year and a half later, he is starting to stand. I sometimes think the sitting had to do with the fact that he spent a lot of time with me, and I obviously sit to use the toilet.

I am not potty training my son yet but he is has been getting very excited to pee on the potty lately. He used to just like sitting down on the potty but out of nowhere, all he wants to do is stand and pee. Some goes in and some goes everywhere else but it's easy to clean, so I'm letting him have fun! With a baby on the way, we are going to wait to potty train until after that new transition, but if wants to potty train himself, he is welcome to do it :)

I vote sitting down - it seems incredibly stupid to try to get a boy (heck even a man to hit something other than the floor or the toilet seat). The whole idea that it might be "emasculating" is ridiculous - what is so masculine about how your urinate? My husband is thirty years old and pees sitting down and I (as the person who cleans the bathroom) am incredibly happy for it. It doesn't make him less than a man and it won't make our son less of a man when he grows up either.

My son trained sitting down when he was 22 months old, then when he hit 2 he started peeing standing up. Little guy missed a couple times in the beginning, but not anymore. He even holds the seat up with one hand sometimes when it won't stay up, pulls down his pants and pees with the other. Much faster as he doesn't have to get out his potty seat and stool every time he needs to pee.

My son decided to stand and funnily enough if he was too short for the toilet, he'd just wedge his feet again the walls and hoist himself up. Talk about a balancing act! Sometimes it made a mess, but he was determined so I didn't complain. We'll see what my little guy does.

I started my son out sitting, because let's face it all potty chairs sit! It's been a really long road but we finally mastered potty training about a month ago. Because he's on the smaller side it was hard for him to reach the potty standing up at first so we gave him a stool and it was his choice. He decided when he was ready to stand and we support him either way. As for the cleanliness, I keep Clorox Wipes in his bathroom and clean the toilet EVERY NIGHT because no, you don't want them touching pee even if they are excellent hand-washers.

Both. I started off sitting him on the seat. And eventually his dad took him to the restroom once. Because he refused to sit on the toilet without his training seat his dad had him stand up. He's been standing ever since.

I think the term 'emasculating' applies to teens and grown men, not 2-3 year olds. They don't even have a clear sense of identity yet, let alone knowing traditional gender roles. It actually builds their confidence to learn by sitting. They're not making a mess or missing half the time, so theres more pride for them. My son started standing about a month after he mastered sitting. Now at 4 he's a pro!

Boys enjoy trying to pee standing up like their dads. You can make a game of it, like by putting cheerios in the toilet for them to use as a target. I do think it is rather emasculating to make a boy pee sitting down; it's fine for when he's first learning, but once he is in school, he'll need to know how to do it standing. I wish girls could pee standing up.

I started with the sitting down (obviously I don't pee standing up), then as he knows to go potty, his dad taught him the standing up part. Now he can do both. It only took us a couple of weeks to get him the 'sitting down' part--as for the standing up..ha..until today, he sometimes still misses (especially in the morning LOL)!

i dont have kids yet, but if i were to have a son in the future, i would teach him to sit.

lol starbucks. my thoughts exactly. Plus unless you are scrubbing the toilet constantly, its dirty. I don't want to give a toddler the task of lifting a toilet seat and putting it back down. Yuck. I dont prescribe to the men have to be men and men pee standing up. I will be teaching my son to sit down. Once he's old enough, he can pee however he wants.

Really? Why would a woman in her right mind teach a boy to pee standing? If grown man make a mess at it, I can only imagine the cleaning that would go in hand with a lil boy doing this! Gross!
