Talking Politics With Tots: Kid Friendly or Are You Kidding?

When it comes to the government and social issues, do you think it's appropriate to talk to your offspring? Sixty-seven percent of lilsugar users said they prefer their children know too much over too little, but does this also prove true for the powers that be and democracy?

I teach fifth grade and I did a four-week project with my class. They chose an issue that was important for this election and researched each candidate's position on the issue. They then created a presentation on the issue that was strictly expository, not persuasive. They shared these with other classes in the school and then conducted the mock election for the entire school. I swear they were more informed than most adults I know.

are you kidding ME with this question? I talk to my daughter about politics and she's only 4! She's interested and that's a wonderful thing! I think its really important to talk to your kids about this subject...BUT I wouldn't, at such a young age, start talking about missiles and bombs!

I think you have to scale it down to their age. My toddler doesn't care about much beyond her own world. My oldest child (10) was fascinated by the election and wanted to hear all about what the ballots looked like, how long the lines were, and the electoral college.

Totally share with your kids. I talk to my baby the same way that I'm planning to talk to him as a teenager and as an adult, by sharing real life issues with him and teaching him about the world he's growing up in.

My kids got very into their mock-elections held at their elementary school this week. They are 7 and 8 and I have spent a lot of time talking about the voting process with them today. They wanted to know all about my voting experience this morning when I picked them up from school. They actually wanted to stay up and watch the results. I think it's awesome that kids are so interested in the the electoral process.

How could it NOT be kid-friendly to involve politics in their lives? It should be range according to their level of understanding, but of course it should be a part of their education.

Totally depends on the kid's age and what issues. Like anything else, kids should learn things little by little, but you don't want to overwhelm them with big issues when they're too young. Little kids worry and feel out of control when they hear about the stuff going on in the world.

I think you should absolutely talk to your kids, but in a way they will understand and not TOO much information , some of the "worlds" issues are downright scary. I remember my dad telling me about cuba having missles, and we live in florida right, so i became obsessed with building a bomb shelter and stocking it....
