Does Your Baby Have a Song?

One of my must–haves for my hospital suitcase was music. I packed portable speakers and my iPod loaded with 100 plus special "baby–to–be" songs.

When my newborn made her debut, K.T. Tunstall's "Suddenly I See" rang out. The song starts, "Her face is a map of the world, is a map of the world. You can see she's a beautiful girl, she's a beautiful girl."

Not knowing my babe's gender ahead of time, there couldn't have been a more poignant or perfect song. Every time I hear the tune, my heart melts a little.

That exact same line was playing on the radio just as the sonographer told us we were having a little girl!

My mom picked my song, but Daddy was always the one who sang it to me. Litty Bitty, by Alan Jackson :] It still makes me smile, and sometimes cry.

my son was born to Open Your Eyes by Snow Patrol, the album Eyes Open was playing in theatre as I had an emergency c-section.

I know this one has been done and re-done, but it's super special to me: Savage Garden-"I Knew I Loved You". The morning I got up for my scheduled C-section, I called a local radio station where a friend of mine was the morning DJ to tell him we were going in for the C-section. I asked him to play a song for me that would fit; I didn't tell him which song. A few minutes later, this song came on, complete with a dedication to us. It's so fitting, and I used to sing it to my son as a lullabye. Even now when he hears it, he gets sleepy! It's not like I picked it out; someone else did, and it's perfect! I also like the line in Aerosmith's "Jaded": "I'm thinkin' 'bout you my...my baby blue" because he's a boy!

my youngest is really a live wire. the song "she's a firecracker" by josh turner makes me laugh and think of her everytime. "When I light the fuse I gotta get back quick You gotta be careful with a dynamite stick Son of a gun she's fun to handle and she packs a punch like a roman candle She's a pack of black cats in a red paper wrapper My little darlin' is a Firecracker" some of the words are about lovers, but the melody is just fun and sassy and well, thast's my baby :)

My daughter is named after a Pixies song (Velouria). She goes by her middle name, though, which is Enid. A couple months after she was born I was googling random stuff, and found a Barenaked Ladies song called Enid. :)

I actually named my daughter after a song, Claudia by Martina Sobara. I said that if I had a daughter I wanted her to be confident and self-assured like the Claudia in the song...so far so good! She is 3 and gets giddy whenever she hears it.

My daughter picked out her own song, it's Better Together by Jack Johnson. When we're in the car and she is getting sick of being in her seat, we play that song and she stops and listens and starts 'singing' along with it. She can be in the middle of a screaming fit and we turn it to this song and silence. It's wonderful, it works everytime and has for 11 months now.

I had a C-section so no music. But in the hospital when our son was crying for the first time my husband couldn't figure out what to do and got his phone out and played whatever was on it. It was Elvis - The Sun sessions. Our son stopped crying in one second. The Sun Sessions has the same effect to this day, 7.5 months later. It is actually the music he falls asleep to as well. It is definitely a sight; my husband bouncing him around to Elvis. But it works every time!

I did the same thing with my iPod and speakers for delivery (created a labor and delivery playlist of my favorite songs), but when I was actually pushing I tuned it out and didn't notice what was playing when he came out. Oops. I think we had the volume too low. Oh well. Regardless, I still love the playlist and listen all of the time. Turns out it's a good mix!
