Sister Wives: To Each Their Own or Can't Fathom This Life?

Yesterday, the Brown family from TLC's reality series Sister Wives sat down with Oprah to discuss the way their household works and the polygamist charges they may face in Utah since their television show aired. Kody and his four wives — Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn — have 16 children and say they are one big happy family of 21. What do you think about their lifestyle?

I would never want to live this lifestyle but I can't help but be impressed with the commitment I see in this family. If Kody Brown was only in it for the sex he could have one night stands with no strings attached. The family seems genuine in their religious beliefs. There would be a lot of benefits---always a mom home for the kids, never having to be lonely, and friendship with the other wives. The women seem intelligent and are doing what they want to do. Janelle has a career, Christine is the stay-at-home mom and teacher---even if we don't want to live like this, there is something to be said for the teamwork and commitment. I think they should be left alone.

They're not hurting me, so why should I care about their lifestyle? I always think it's funny when people say that someone's lifestyle is wrong. Wrong for whom? If it's wrong for you don't do it, but don't berate someone else for it.

*shrug* I'm actively polyamarous. I don't know that I'd share ONE spouse well, but I have a husband, a wife and another wife who all share ME. But we don't cohabitate, and it's not religion based. One of my wives is married and has a child, like I am and do, and if the other were to find someone, I'd be her best "man" totally. It doesn't work for everyone, and any relationship is hard work. But it works for me.

Just a thought: Monogamy is the minority in the world's society. In most societies polygyny was or is the preferred system. Polygyny was even common in England before the catholic church took power. "We" are the "weird ones" Also, maybe "sister wives" are actually career women who chose the polygamous lifestyle so they would have a support system in raising children. It makes sense. It's a fine lifestyle if you aren't marrying for love.

They're doing their own thing, but in fact there are laws against bigamy. Like Amber, I have trouble understanding why some people can rage against gay marriage but shrug this off. If dad has three women at home that he calls his wives, isn't he being unfaithful when he goes out courting his potential fourth?

I notice conservatives don't seem to have a huge problem with this like they do for homosexual relationships even with their "one man, one woman" stickers. No one is out crusading against this.

He's only legally married to one, Meri, the one he married first. They chose the lifestyle they're leading and they're not shoving it down their children's throats by telling them this is how they HAVE to live. They're letting their children choose and going to support whatever decision they make. Their children are happy and healthy and I don't see how they can charge this ONE family with bigamy when there are multiple polygamist families in Utah. They're not being judgmental of others by saying monogamy is wrong. They're doing their own thing and I give them credit, I could never share my husband with another woman willingly or otherwise.

If they're all legally married, they're all legally entitled to any marital benefits. The government would have to accomodate all of a multi-married service person's spouses & children. None of the 4-5 spouses could testify against the others. How would the government determine who was legally responsible for the children if all the grownups are legally married to each other at the time of birth? Would the birth spouse have legally superior rights to her child over the other spouses? It's not just about a bunch of grown ups who want to play house together.

Both. I can't fathom this life for me, but if they want it, have at it. None of the women seem insecure to me, especially the one that just had a baby. The husband is the one who seems to me like he wants to keep adding to feel that he's desirable.

The problem is that you get the notion these women are in it because they are insecure and don't think they deserve a men for themself alone. They are adult, though. I don't think anybody should tell them how to live. Are you gonna throw adulterers in jail now, too? They didn't do anything wrong legally, don't even know what they could ever be charged with! I say marry whoever you want to marry, be it a girl a dude or 4 of each kind...

I see a lot of benefits to this lifestyle, when it's as this family is and not a strict highly religious lifestyle where people are told how to think. There's always been this belief that it "takes a village to raise a child" and what better way than in a loving family with multiple parents? While I understand there are a lot of people who believe this lifestyle is wrong or that they couldn't live it, I also don't feel I could live it but I have no problems with it. You look at many cultures around the world and see that there are a lot of people responsible for raising kids and making a "happy family" so why can't we in "western cultures" embrace the idea?
