Picking names for a baby-to-be is one of the most fun parts of the pregnancy process. With so many things to consider when selecting a name, many parents spend much of the first half of their pregnancies picking out both boy and girl names as they wait to learn the baby's sex. Once the lil one's gender is determined – either at the 20-week sonogram or upon delivery – it seems fair game to ask new parents about the names they held in reserve for a child of the opposite sex. While some parents are willing to share a name, others guard it out of fear of namenapping.
If you went on to have another child of the opposite sex, did you use your reserved name?

No, we never chose a girl's name during my first pregnancy. I toyed around a bit, but we figured there was no reason to seriously waste our time or get too excited until we knew the sex on the 20 week u/s. When we knew it was a boy, we focused on that. This time around, I'm 3 weeks from my due date with a girl and we still have no idea. But even in the past 2 years, my tastes have changed a bit, so I'm not sure I would stick with a girl's name I had already chosen.
1Our first daughter named our second daughter including the spelling of their names. She wanted them both to have the exact same number of letters. Hers is Elizabeth Arielle and my youngest is Kimberlie Kathryn.
2When we had our 1st we had a girls name picked and didn't have a boys name decided on, so of course we had a boy. When we had our 2nd, we couldn't come up with another girls name we liked any better than the one we'd picked for our 1st, so we used it! Why not? We still loved it. When we had our 3rd, we had a little harder time because neither of us loved the same names, girl or boy. When our 2nd daughter arrived, we found a name within a few minutes that we both loved and thought suited her, although everyone had expected us to use the same letter we'd used for the first 2 kids.
3Anon1, that is cute. I assume she is older than my son. We have asked our son what he wants to name his sister and he only replies "Bus Beep Beep." I'm thinking not!
4We did. I can get kind of crazy obsessed with planning and such, so we had both names picked out beforehand. My husband still loved the boy name, so we used it 2 1/2 years later. It seems weird to put it in those terms, but eh well.
5we used the second choice girl name(my first is a girl) for my sons (my second child) middle name. it is a non-gender specific name and we both still loved it...but i wanted a different boy name. if my son was a girl we would have used it for his first name....this may only make sense to me
6If we end up having a boy someday we would definitely use the same middle name we had picked out. It has a lot of meaning to my boyfriend...It's his name in French. I really don't like it but he cares a lot about it, so oh well.
7We wouldn't use the first name though. We really loved it but then realized it was one of those really trendy names. I don't know, maybe 7 years down the road (we're not planning on another child for quite some time) it won't be so trendy anymore and we'll end up using it but I really don't think so.
We ended up with identical twin girls the first time round and decided not to share any names we liked until we knew what we were having which was really hard on both of us!
The second time round we decided to share beforehand picking out both boys and girls names and ended up with a boy!
Now it's the third time we're going through this process and while I love it, my husband hates it so we've agreed to stick with the girls names we picked out last time and are going with family names if it's a boy!
