Someone might wanna tell Mrs. McSteamy that cream puffs are a much better (and dare I say tastier) alternative to smoke rings when it comes to breeding new life. Rebecca Gayheart's handsome hubby may play a doctor on television, but apparently any advice from her own doctor regarding the hazards of smoking while pregnant may have gone by the wayside. While it was acceptable in the past, we now know all the harm that can come with nicotine presence in the womb. In hopes of providing their child the best start in life, many expectant ladies take the nine months to rid themselves of the habit while others just keep on keepin' on like nothing has changed.

I agree with 16 and 20 and surprisingly 23. It's no one's business but the mother's. If you want to find something to harp about try the abused kids in our foster care programs, or school systems not doing their jobs right. Otherwise mind your business. Because what a prgnant woman does with her body is her business, not yours. I got one for you. If you want to protect unborn babies, work with the moms who are trying to get off street drugs like crack, cocaine, heroin, pot etc. Don't put them down, drugs and alchohol are addictions, I know. I watched my step-daughter go thru it for years before she got clean. And did it pregnant. Find a way to help in this area. Because in this area the baby truly is at risk far more than from cigarettes.

You people except for #20 seem to have lost your minds to say that just because a pregnant woman smokes they should not have kids. In no way does it make a woman a bad mother. #6, a heart murmur, which by the way is a whole in the heart and NOT caused by smoking, low amniotic fluid is NOT caused by smoking. Maybe you need to learn the facts from like going to Medical School and reading EVERY medical journal there is, become an researcher and then maybe you can learn what really causes these things. Until then, it's not your business. I'm not a Chrisitian(I'm Wiccan) and I have nothing against them, but I do know that there are 10 commandments supposedly handed down and one of them states clearly that 'Thou shalt not judge". And I say that to all of you a^^es who are just because a woman smokes. It does not determine what kind of mother a person makes. And for the record, I'm also a nurse. And yes have worked with many pregnant women over the last 20 yrs or so. I have a son and smoked through my entire pregnancy a pack a day. He was born witn no problems, never had any health problems growing up, nor does he now. Smoking did not make me an unfit mother nor did it make me less deserving of being a mother. Never drank then and still don't, just never got into it for some reason. And I have a grandson 10 months old and his mom is expecting again next month another boy and has smoked through both pregnancies and neither boy had any problems. ANd she is a great mother. It's been showed in research done by those of us who studied Psychology that when you down other people it is stemming from your own insecurites and mistakes you have made. So on that note and the things I've said earlier in this post, Clear out your own da^m closets and judge yourselves, because you sure as h^^l don't have the right to judge anymone else. Maybe someone should be raking you over the coals and interferring in your life where they have no business. It would serve all you self-rightous fools what you deserve. Nope, not judging, just observing. I'll leave the judging to my religious Gods and Godesses, and you leave it to yours.

Number 2 said "She tried to quit for them but wasn't able." LMAO!! Awwww...were the cigarettes shoved into her mouth and lit by someone with a gun? What a lame ass excuse. You know how to quit? Don't buy them!! Wow! so hard! Smoking while pregnant should be illegal since you are potentially causing lasting harm to another human being.

I'm shocked by the comments on here. I'm shocked by the actual lack of medical knowledge. I'm shocked by the lack of empathy and compassion for such situations. We all know cigarettes are bad for a fetus but do any of you the real statistics? A woman who smokes under 4 cigarettes a day isn't causing her unborn child more problems then an overweight pregnant woman (and I'm sure nobody here would have the nerve to tell a fat lady that she shouldn't have kids!) Above 4 cigarettes it's a problem and a woman should seek medical help and support. Another health risk to a fetus is maternal stress. A stressed out pregnant woman in withdrawal can be just as unhealthy to an unborn child. When weighing risks/benefits (as dr's do) it would be less problematic smoking one cigarette a day and not stressing out then quitting and having anxiety attacks because of it. It is preferable to quit. No doubt. But for those that are confronted with a "surprise" pregnancy, it's not always easy. If planning a pregnancy, smoking mothers should try to quit before getting pregnant. It makes the "restrictions" of pregnancy a lot easier to deal with. I do agree with one poster: if you're needing a cig so bad that you'll smoke it "in public", you're probably not content with 1 cigarette a day (or even 2,3 or 4) I think I smoked 2 cigarettes pregnant but I hid like a bandit! Don't throw the stones people, I'm sure every mother or father has had to deal with someone's shaking head of disapproval about something they've done.

Not only is the photo of her smoking old, but have they confirmed a pregnancy or is Sugar still assuming based on the photos that could just be her after a large lunch? Lord knows my belly's pooched out like that after a Big Mac.

It disgusts me that soneone would still smoke while pregnangt. My mom did with me and I have asthma because of it. As hard as it may be to give up your vices, it is the most basic thing you can do to allow your wee one to start off on the best foot possible.

Although I don't think one should smoke during pregnancy, all the comments saying that if you can't stop smoking you shouldn't have a child are ridiculous. It's not your place to decide that.

roaring silence, i have heard that too (that if you smoke SO MUCH that your body will be in shock if you quit cold turkey) so they are told to smoke one or two a day to wean off BUT if you see a pregnant woman smoking in public, do you really think that's her ONE a day? if you had one smoke to enjoy all day long do you think you'd do it out in the open with your preggo belly for everyone to see/judge? i think i'd wait until i was home, relaxed, and comfortable to have my indulgence... so i'm sure for a lot of selfish smokers who can't/won't quit, they just use that as an excuse

i don't think we should be ashamed for looking down on pregnant women who some (or drink) - it's simply unhealthy for your child and you're selfish if you keep up the habit....anyone can quit, it's just a matter of willpower, and if you can't put your child first, you shouldn't be having one. simple as that.

this woman needs a smack. You wanna be harmful to your own body? FINE. But your body is not only your right now. You are carrying your poor, innocent defenseless child in there. Smothering it with smoke. What a sin. If she is that selfish, she should not be allowed to reproduce. I am 11 weeks pregnant. I smoked. The MINUTE I found out I was pregnant, in the garbage those cigarettes went. Cold turkey. Smoking was not even an option anymore. Was it hard? A little...but it was just so cut and dry i didn't even mourn the loss of it. Pregnant. No smoking. That's IT. Same for wine, beer, any alcohol. I'm not perfect...I sneak a coffee or two a week. But if that's the absolute worst I do, I think I'm OK. I've given up everything else. And didn't even mind doing it :). It's for my precious little belly bean! This woman still puts herself and her own desires first. Thats obvious

What is wrong with that person? Ugh. One time I saw a pregnant woman smoking and asked her if she didn't think that it was a bad idea... and she said her doctor had told her that, because she smoked so much before, the withdrawal symptoms if she stopped suddenly would be much worse than if she continued to smoke some. And I don't think she was kidding.

Smoking when pregnant is wrong and stupid but it has already been found that this photo is old! So we don't know that she smokes while pregnant.

A friend of mine, then not now, smoked through her pregnancy and ended up not only having to be emergency induced becuase of drastically low amniotic fluid, but the baby had numerous problems the doctor attributed to the smoking. She had a heart murmur as well as a hole in her heart that refused to close on its own. She had several other undeveloped issues like ducts and such. These things could have happened anyway, but the doctors shes seen feel that becuase of a lack of history with the problems and the fact that she smoked 2 packs a day is what caused them. I think she's a complete idiot. I knew her 5 years before she had the baby and her biggest thing was that she smoked for her but that if she got pregnant she would quit... mmhmm, THAT happened.

My mom smoked with through out all 3 of her pregnancies. She tried to quit for them but wasn't able. It doesn't disgust me, I just feel bad for the pregnant lady.

I have to admit that I hate to see pregnant women smoking it actually disgust me. I don't understand why woman do it.
