The Shower Hug: Ga Ga or Gag?

Showers are few and far between for new mothers, but a few minutes under the rushing water can give them a new lease on postpartum life. Warm water can lead to painful letdown so one woman created the Shower Hug ($30), a terry knit wrap with a Velcro closure designed to ease the pain and protect the bustline. The fast-drying material can be wrung out after a shower and hung to dry until the next time mom finds a few minutes for herself. Would you invest in one?

I've nursed 3 kids and found letdown in the first few weeks to be very uncomfortable! That being said, I also never worried about letdown in the shower as I was always careful to feed shortly before I showered for the first few months when the shower would trigger a release. I hate wasting my milk!

If you read the website it talks about support and relief not only during nursing, but other things like mastectomy, augmentation, reduction, reconstruction and lifts. I think this has been portrayed poorly.. sounds more like its for support and such, rather then keeping them away from the warm water. It also mentions protection for the skin and nipples, which i can totally understand. I coudlnt handle the water on my nipples right after birth, way too sensitive.

I think what they are intended this for is for the first few days of when your milk comes in and you're really engorged. For the first few days of nursing, letdown was quite painful for me. Afterwards it became what you would call a normal letdown. Still, the product doesn't make any sense, and I found that being in warm water helped relieve the pain. I wouldn't buy this product.

I never had a painful letdown so this shocks me. When I was engorged and wasn't able to pump or feed from it I just used a warm rice sock (sock filled with rice) before feeding or pumping, the letdown was a nice sensation.

A letdown absolutely can be painful, especially those first few weeks. But in actuality, warm water is encouraged to help ease the pain of it as well as help avoid blocked ducts. And yes, warm compresses or running warm water over breasts is advised to help induce a letdown if you're having problems, especially for pumping moms. This product goes against all advice and makes no sense.

This makes no sense. Letdown shouldn't be painful at all!! And so you leak milk in the shower - it's the shower, it just washes away. And does the shower really cause letdown? I nursed for 2 years and never had that happen.

I agree, Anonymous. I am also confused about a "painful letdown". Obviously everyone is different, but letdown isn't supposed to be painful; if anything, it's a feeling of release and relief. From the website, this seems to be targeted toward nursing women, but I would think using a compress like this could lead to mastitis.

It doesn't make sense. It's not like a towel is going to protect your boobs from the hot water and stop the "painful letdown." If anything, cradling your breasts and then keeping the water snug against them is more likely to cause the letdown. What's the point?
