My Top 11 Pregnancy Must Haves

As I prepare to wrap things up here at LilSugar for a few months of quality time with my baby boy, I'm also preparing to wrap up what's left of my pregnancy. I've been beyond fortunate to have an extremely easy time of it — something that I attribute more to good luck (and genetics) than anything out of the ordinary that I've done.

While I can't claim to have the secrets to nine months of smooth sailing, I'd love to share with you a few of the things that have helped me to feel my best — on the inside and out — throughout the journey. Enjoy!

Quality Time With My Super-Supportive Husband

While babymoons are all the rage (and we were lucky to sneak away for a great little getaway during my second trimester), just appreciating the prebaby time that you have together, wherever you are, is of the utmost importance.

Go on date nights, get together with friends, and share in the excitement and anticipation of what's to come with your significant other. Enjoy one another's company, whether it's in the Caribbean or at the coffee shop down the block.

Scarves, Scarves, and More Scarves

In those first few months, when my regular jeans were still fitting but a bit more snug than usual, throwing on a scarf provided just the right amount of coverage. And now that I find myself relying on the same stretchy jersey dresses week after week, accessorizing with scarves makes it look like I actually put some thought into my outfit.

(Side note: if you use public transportation, make sure your belly is as visible as can be . . . you're much more likely to have someone give up a seat that way!)

A Great Pair of Maternity Jeans

I splurged on this pair of 7 For All Mankind Maternity Jeans [1] and found them to be totally worth it. You can spend almost as much money trying to find the right fit in lesser-priced jeans and never end up with exactly what you're looking for. Make the investment early on in your pregnancy, tailor them if you need to, and you can always rationalize the cost by loaning them to a pregnant friend once your baby's here.

Walks in the Park . . . Lots of Them!

I've found New York to be a great city to be pregnant in, as my day-to-day routine forces me to do a lot of walking — it's built-in exercise, whether I'm doing it intentionally or not.

Almost every weekend, my husband and I take our dog for long walks in Prospect Park, and that, paired with yoga (we'll get to that . . . ), has been just the right amount, and right kind, of prenatal exercise for me.

Prenatal Massage

A wonderful indulgence at any stage of pregnancy (I was surprised at how relaxed I was, and how good it felt, even in my third trimester), massage offers both mental and physical benefits. Make sure you choose a practitioner who is skilled in treating pregnant women and has the necessary props to make the experience comfortable and enjoyable.

Prenatal Yoga

Prenatal yoga class [3] has turned into one of my favorite parts of the week. Whether or not you practiced yoga prepregnancy, I highly recommend giving it a go. The right teacher will be able to suggest poses or exercises for whatever weird aches and pains you're experiencing that day, and it's been such a nice way to feel like I'm getting a workout in, without worrying about if it's good for the baby (it is!).

A (Tiny Little) Daily Vice

I absolutely love coffee, and at my first ob-gyn visit, I was beyond relieved when I was told that a cup or two a day was A-OK. So I drink that much (every now and then alternating for a decaf), and I don't feel bad about it. That little indulgence has made nine months sans sushi and wine seem totally manageable. If there's something that you really enjoy, and it's on the "in moderation" list, go for it . . . in moderation, of course.

A Go-To Dressy Dress

If you have weddings or other dress-up occasions on the agenda over the course of your pregnancy, make sure that you have something to wear that really makes you feel good. I found that this easy lace dress from ASOS [5] did the trick for me (and at $75, it was a pretty good deal). Going to a cocktail or black-tie event for the first time while pregnant can be a little bit strange, as everyone else is kicking back the bubbly and you're left with your water or mocktail. You'll want to look, and feel, your best.

Old Navy Tanks

A little something to offset the cost of those maternity jeans and prenatal massages, Old Navy's Rib Knit Maternity Tanks [6] are the best. At just $13 a pop (and you can usually get them on sale for even less), I found them to be just the right length and level of stretchiness to wear with jeans, under cardigans, working out . . . really wherever.

Lots of Water!

This is a little mundane, yes, but I've found it to be absolutely essential to always have a water bottle with me. Pregnancy leaves you feeling out of breath and dehydrated a lot more quickly than you normally would, and drinking water is always a good thing!

Mustela Stretch Marks Double Action and Instant Comfort Legs

I use Mustela [7]'s Stretch Marks Double Action [8] cream almost every day, and so far, no stretch marks (though that can also be attributed to genes). In any case, it's not at all greasy, and it feels and smells great. I've tried a lot of different brands' stretch mark formulas and really believe that this is the best. Mustela's Instant Comfort Legs [9] lotion is amazingly refreshing after a long day on your feet or a long car ride or flight.
