Phone Sex Movie Interview

Can I tell you something dirty? What is this up here? Love, I love you. Oh. And well, we just met. I like you. Hi, I'm Tara Block and I'm here with Jamie Travis and Katie Anne Naylon for the new movie, For a Good Time, Call. You know, you're not better than me. You're not better than phone sex. I'm better than phone sex. Yeah, I know your own story is loosely based on your own experiences as a phone sex operator in college. Can you talk a little bit about that experience? Sure. It was pretty racy I guess. It started from a place of I needed some money and I needed a job on campus. So the parking was tricky and. Then it just snowballed into this working for a little phone sex line and it didn't pay quite as well as I thought it would and then thinking I'm ambitious, I'm clever how can I do this for myself and cut out the middleman and that's what I did and my friend and I ran this phone sex line from literally our dorm room, it was crazy. Were there any crazy stories that were just a little bit too racy to include in the movie? I don't know if I could even say them here if their too racy for the film but all of it was really crazy for me because I was a virgin, and I had not had sex. So, everything was crazy. If it didn't sound like making love like in Pretty Woman on the piano it was too much for me so yeah. How did you research that? Well, you know, it's so funny, it was the beginning of Google. So I just switched from AskJeeves.com to Google. You could put anything in there and it would pop right up. Never even heard of Ask Jeeves. No. It was this little butler and you could search with him. He was out there looking for your answers. So I had to Google S&M, and I was, "Oh, yeah, we could do that, I guess." But it was that and the orgasm scene from when Harry met Sally and a classic and a little Napster research for some audio erotica. I sort of winged it. I've always been sort naturally a good winger. I love being useful. Yeah. Put me on your cage. It is so big, and it's looking at me, let me out. Gotta go bye. Jamie, so what drew you to this screen play? Well I been reading scripts for five years, Hollywood scripts. I live in Canada. And I had never been interested in anything. Nothing ever compelled me to take a reading until I read this script, and I just thought it was so funny and so original. I laughed on every page. I'll tell you more. Keep going. And I also got really weepy at one point. I think there was like an undercurrent. An emotional undercurrent in the script that was really subtle about friendship and about female friendship that really struck a nerve in me. Ans I also read it from beginning. the end which I never do. I have an extremely short attention span, and so that was a very good time. But I also loved that it recalled movies from the 80's that I love. Movies with Shelly Long and Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn. These are like three favorite women ever. and it had that kind of spirit, it had a level of physical comedy and it was an empowering female story which is something that you don't see that often anymore. Katie, there's no toilet paper. What? I can't here you, I'm running late. Bye. Do you guys have your own roommate horror stories? Oh my gosh. So many! Can I tell you something dirty? Yes. When does this disappear? I had a roommate in New York who, he and I did not get along at all and he moved in because he was somebody's boyfriend and then the girl moved out and I was stuck with him. Anyway so one daymy other roommate had a dog and it was chewing on something so I pulled it out and it was a dirty condom, out of the dog's mouth. It was the most disgusting thing that ever happened. And, I left him this note that said. Well, I thought really sweet, considering what had happened. And I just said, "To the owner of the dirty condom that I found in the dog's mouth. Please be more careful, it is a curious creature." And instead, I got this line up, "To the passive aggressive author of the above note. You need a massage, you're a psychopath." It really went on and on. And I saved both notes just in case one day it comes up but I'm glad you asked because I've had really careless roommates before, but these girls are a little different. I mean they're at odds because they come from a different way of life or different people versus they're not just irritating. Yeah, I can't speak about any of my roommates because I've only had two in my whole life so they are going to know I am talking about them and you know they were pretty great. But you know it's funny Jamie and I fell in friends love while making this movie and he is moving to LA. And I was like, "We should live together. We should live together." And then Jamie's like, "I don't think so. Let's not ruin a good thing." I feel like it could ruin our good thing. We also talked about working together and about writing together. That's probably better. Yeah. I think we need to live separately. Yeah. If we live together, we'd end up like Catherine Turner and Michael Douglas at the end of "The War of The Roses". We wouldn't have the sweet you know, the sweet kind of friendship that evolves in this film. And our friendship is already sweet, so it could only turn us into enemies. You two hate each other for no reason. And you know what was this process of how you did a raunchy comedy for women versus for men? Like how is it different? We both inhaled at the same time. Sharp intake of breath. Times 2. I haven't done one for men versus. I mean this is my first big thing so, but I would that say we knew we were pleasing a pleasing ourselves first and like. She likes to do that, first thing in the morning. No, not me. How do you know me so well? That's why we're not living together really. No. It was about pleasing women first. And that we wanted to talk in a way that celebrate the way women need to talk to each other. Right. And that was what we were doing and men seemed to be really surprised by the humor there. I don't think as many guys as you think were dragged to Sex and the City. And even if they were, they really seem to be enjoying our movie just in a very real way because they know how their girlfriends are there learning. And when I first wrote the script I was, you know, this is my sales ploy, I think, for them, but I was so nervous that someone else would direct the film. Maybe a straight male, and that the characters would be objectified and it was so important for me when I read the script that the focus of it be a female friendship story and I as someone who've always spent time with women. Girls. Women. And I've always chosen them over men in my friendly relationships. I hold them on a pedestal. And, I just love you. Well, we just met, I like you maybe we'll, maybe it'll elevate after the interview. No. I love her. But I felt like that relationship with women in general and female stories and that kind of respect for female sexuality as more of a supporter was important to the overall tone and something that made me feel like I was the right person for it.
