Straight out of the gate, children are unable to soothe themselves. Hence, pacifiers were invented and aptly named. Some parents choose not to give their babies the artificial nipple and hope they will discover their thumb soon enough. Like many moms, I chose to give my son a pacifier until he could find his appendage on his own. At four months old, we struck gold, and the lil guy has a near-permanent fascination with his thumb in his mouth.

I have no interest in my son sucking his thumb. From the day he was born, I gave him a pacifier and he took to it very well. After a few months, he found his thumb but I wouldn't let him have it. If I saw that thumb go in his mouth, I pulled it out and put in a pacifier. The way I look at it, a pacifier is much easier to take away than a thumb. My husband sucked his thumb until he was like 12! You can't cut off a thumb but you can throw away a pacifier.

My daughter started with a paci but that went out the window when she got a cold at 7 months old. She couldn't breathe through her nose and that made her hate sucking on the pacifier. However, starting about 2 months ago (she's 22 months) she has been a finger-sucker. She sucks her index and middle finger on her right hand when she's tired. She also twirls her hair with her left hand. I'm not sure how we're going break her of the finger-sucking...

first 2 loved their binky :kiss: with number 3 we have pix of her sucking her thumb in the womb, and she always preferred that to the binky. made it so much eaiser, the hand they can find on their own, with the binky lovers there were a few anxious moments when we couldn't find one, lol.

I said pacifier because that's what the majority of my 4 liked, but none of them used it for very long. If I remember correctly none of them used one past 3 months old.
