One thing I was taught growing up that's always stuck with me: please don't touch a new baby's hands! Their tiny little fingers are adorably tempting, but they inevitably find their way into their mouths. Even if you've washed your hands, it's just not a good idea. I personally extend that to faces as well - their tender skin gets irritated so easily.

I like the tip about stopping by on the new parents schedule or at least phoning to make sure it was ok. My husband's relatives wanted to stop and see the baby the day I had her and I didn't want any visitors, they were really upset, they would also stop over whenever they wanted after she was born and of course I would be trying to lay her down or she would be sleeping. Really rude was what I thought.

My aunt and cousin gave birth two weeks apart, last summer, so about a week after their youngest were born I took all of their kids, as well as my other cousins, out to the local water park for the day and paid for everything. The mothers really appreciated the alone time to unwind and the kids enjoyed the splashing and eating. Though I had to keep track of 12 kids ranging from 7 - 17 (pretty much chaos) it was still a lot of fun, and I hope that when my time comes, someone would do that for me.

kikidawn — that's a great point. I always get the older sibs a lil something too!

One thing I always like to do is this: bring a gift for the newborn, but don't forget a gift for the older siblings if there are any. They could be feeling left out if the newborn is getting all the gifts. Also, if you are close to the couple take the older sibling(s) out for ice cream or to the park. It gives the older kids some one on one time with someone and gives the parents some time with the newborn.
