Mother Gives Birth to Two Sets of Twins

Women undergoing fertility treatments usually aren't surprised when the result is multiple fetuses. In some cases, it is a welcome gift as the dream of a large family is instantly fulfilled.

For a 40–year–old Nigerian woman, her hopes of becoming a mother came true times four. Teacher Nelly Itula gave birth to an extraordinary set of quadruplets — identical twin girls and fraternal twin boys. Fertility drug-induced multiple pregnancies often result in fraternal twins as numerous embryos are implanted as treatment. Rarely do women have identical twins AND fraternal twins.

Do you mean she gave birth to two sets of identical twins with separate pregnancies, or that she had identical quads in one pregnancy?

I remember watching a show on TLC or discovery about a woman who without fertility drugs gave birth to four idential twins. They were so cute, I wonder if they do an update.

I didn't say it didn't, I said if that egg is prone to it, it simply is. Fertility treatments don't necessarily make an egg split, they just may release an egg that otherwise wouldn't have been released. Your chances of many things baby-related increase with fertility treatment since there's a chance of more eggs, more babies, more hormones, etc.

"If your egg is subject to splitting into twins, it is whether you're undergoing IVF or not."Again, you chances of having a Monozygotic set of twins increases with the use of ovulation induction, assisted hatching and ICSI, any of which she could of had.So is it rare for women to have such occurrences. Absolutely. But your chances increase greatly when receiving infertility treatment.Sorry for reading your post wrong babysugar!

I find it interesting that the sets of twins still divided into 2 boys and 2 girls. They look so vulnerably little in this photo.

It doesn't say identical twins rarely happen with IVF. It says the women rarely have identical AND fraternal twins. That's true whether it's IVF or a naturally-occuring pregnancy. It's not unheard of, but it's rare.If your egg is subject to splitting into twins, it is whether you're undergoing IVF or not.

It is not true that identical twins rarely happen with IVF and fertility drugs. It is much more common for women who receive fertility drugs to have identical twins then a women who does not receive drugs. My cousin had identical twin girls and a boy triplets, and her RE told her identical are not rare for women with IF.

I've never heard it put that way before, I'd always just heard "quadruplets" with how many were identical, if any. A friend of ours had triplets where two were identical and one was fraternal. No fertility drugs involved.

Wow that's crazy!I once heard about a woman giving birth to two sets of identical twins and if I remember right there were not fertility treatments involved. Both eggs (which would have been fraternal twins) split to become two sets of identical twins!
