What's the One Newborn Item You Can't Live Without?

When women are expecting their first child, they have a checklist of everything they need for baby's arrival. Receiving blankets? Check. Bottles? Check. Car seat? Check. But when the second baby enters the picture, mommy ditches the list and just tries to make it to the hospital on time. Having just experienced this, I was physically ready and more mentally prepared for the second child's debut. Blankets shmankets — just deliver the baby and get me home!

Obviously I needed the diapers, a car seat and bottles, but if I could only pick one superfluous item, it would be the Fisher Price Nature's Touch Baby Papasan Cradle Swing ($140). From day one that device has served my son and me well. Initially, he slept in it and gazed at the moving birds. As the months passed, he began chilling in it while I showered, cooked, cleaned up or played with his sister. When he was fussy and didn't want to nap in his crib, he snoozed away in the swing. While I would be challenged to choose between the swing and his Fisher Price Nature's Touch Baby Papasan Seat, I'm pretty sure the swing could serve both purposes.

Which baby gadget could you not live without?

My Maclaren rocker was the best. It has handles so I could pick her up and carry her safely in the rocker from room to room. It also folds up really nicely for travel.

Oh, I agree with the swing! And, close seconds would be a phil and ted's stroller and baby carrier — I need to invest in new ones before my third child arrives.

When she was tiny, it was definitely the same swing you have. Sadly, the motor crapped out after only three months so we had to get rid of it. When she was a bit older, my must-have was my Hot Sling pouch sling. After I moved her out of her infant seat and into a convertible rear facing seat, I needed something to carry her in since I didn't want to get the stroller out all of the time. I started putting her on my hip with the sling, and for a good 9 months, it was the best thing ever.

Definately the swing and actually his Baby Einstein Mozart DVD. There were times when he had colic, that it was the only thing that would soothe him was being wrapped up tight in the swing watching the video. I also loved our Graco Travel System, it was so handy to have the portable seat. Now that he is older he LOVES his doorway jumper.
Our Charriot stroller/bike trailer has been amazing! We have a double and since our yourngest was born a few weeks before Christmas it's come in very handy! Aside from being able to walk, jog, bike and hike with it, it's completely enclosed to keep the elements out when needed. We go carolling every Christmas eve at our local "town square" and we were able to but the baby into her carseat in the chariot and close it all up and she was warm and toasty. No snow or chilling winds for her!
I have to say the best things for my kids ever were my wraps and slings! My yourngest is almost 6 months and she still hasn't rode in a stroller inless it's been for a quick trip in her carseat into the store for only a handfull of items. I LOVE carrying my babies as long as is comfortable for me and them. They grow and become independant so quickly that I very much enjoy snuggling them as long as I can.

This swing was an absolute lifesaver for me. I loved that I could choose the direction it swung. My son spent many-a-hour swinging away in it!
Breastpads. Really, all of my kids were held the first first months so swings and bouncers didn't come in handy until they weren't newborns anymore. But each child liked something different, so I can't choose any one thing. One loved the swing, one loved the doorway jumper, one loved the exersaucer, one loved being free...

i have this swing and i loved it with my daughter...just like the post said she used it all the time. it will coming out of storage as soon as her little brother arrives!

I agree schnap- while my son's rainforest swing has definitely served us well... but his Rain Forest bouncer has been fabulous for both him and me! Also, every single baby or toddler that has come over has been enthrawled by it too. With it's moving animals, light up waterfall, noises and music (not to mention the actual bouncing aspect) it's a total winner.

My son hated his swing (and still won't go on the playground swings--go figure). But he LOVED his Fisher Price Rainforest Bouncer. It was the best thing ever. He napped in it, played in it (he loved to kick!), and it was the one safe place I could put him at any time. It was a sad day at about 7.5 months when we had to retire it. It's totally worn out now, but I will definitely be buying another one if we have another baby!
