Everybody knows raising baby ain't cheap. Before a woman is even sure she's pregnant, she's shelling out $20 for a pregnancy test...unless she got it from the dollar store! Count the prenatal vitamins and maternity clothes and the fetus is already ringing up a bill. A new report out claims the new cost of raising baby totals $221,190 — adjusted to $291,570 for inflation. Take the quiz to seed if you can guess how they came up with the grand total.

In the 50s-60s the government was trying to lower the cost of food, thus the fast food/cheap food era we have now. While our food has become much cheaper our health care budgets have sky rocketed compared to what they were then. But who spends $32,000 a year on food?! That's $615 a week!
1It's the cost for 17 years, not one year.
2Not everyone blows 20 bucks on pregnancy tests... I buy the store brand for around 4 bucks. Its exciting the first time, but after that you're really just looking for results.
3yeah we spend a lot less on food now because we eat cheap (in quality) food - michael pollan has said this numerous times
4And the housing number is misleading -- you would pay for housing whether or not you had children (although I understand that children may require a bigger house/ better school district/ etc.)
5Exactly running, that's why I chose childcare for number 1.
