The problem: That beautiful crib your first baby slept in (or even one you used as a child) probably doesn't meet today's safety standards. The drop-side crib — once considered a convenience that helped parents reach into the sleep area to get an easy hold on their babies — is now illegal. As of June 2011, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) outlawed the manufacture and sale of drop-side cribs (including resales) due to infants becoming trapped between the rails and the mattresses.
The fix: Cribs with fixed rails, or any crib sold after June 28, 2011, comply with the new safety standards and are considered safe for kids.
