Downside of Letting Child Choose Halloween Costume

Sure, parents let their kids pick their Halloween costumes . . . until it's an outfit worthy of an objection! Last night on Parenthood, Sydney dressed as Miss California, much to her parents' chagrin. After Joel and Julia used everything from feminism to the weather to try to persuade the little girl to change her costume, the child trick-or-treated pageant-ready!

In what appeared to be an attempt to balance out their daughter's costume, Joel dressed as Abraham Lincoln and Julia as Amelia Earhart. Would you let your child wear an outfit that you don't believe in?

I will have rules - no violent or gory, and no sexual costumes, but other then that my kiddos can pick their costumes. I still haven't gotten any costumes because they are all highly poor quality for ridiculous amounts of money. I'm hemming and hawing, and I need to get on the ball. Running - so, you had your baby? congrats!

to a degree, I can see this makes sense, but what's wrong with Miss America? I love this show, but I haven't watched this episode yet...TIVO!

No, I am the parent and I set limits that I expect to be followed. I would explain why I find it offensive, bad, etc., but at the end of the day my son is 5 and does not get to make every decision himself.

I’ve told my daughter I’m not okay with violent characters or gore – but I’ve been lucky: while she occasionally talks about costumes like that (I think just to wind me up), in the end, she’s always opted for funny or pretty costumes.
