Would You Break the Law to Save Your Child's Life?

Are laws meant to be broken when your child's life is at stake? Inhale is a phenomenal film that explores the lengths that law abiding citizens and parents Paul and Diane Stanton (Dermot Mulroney and Diane Kruger) take to try and save their ailing daughter Chloe's (Mia Stallard) life as she waits for a lung transplant. The movie is incredibly difficult to watch at points as it explores illegal organ trafficking, but the flick also poses an intense ethical question. What would you do?

As a mother AND someone who works with sexually abused children I have to say no. I have seen fathers threaten (even actually) harm pedophiles who've hurt their children and the FATHERS land longer prison sentences. In several cases, both parents have ended up in prison and their children are put in foster care. Who is hurt the most? The children. I understand the sentiment (trust me, I really really do) but I want to be there for my child every minute. Not monitored phone calls and once a week visits. Hold my child's hand, smooth down her hair, be there.

I have less respect for the law than most people... so yes. As for killing 100 people, are we talking like 100 good honest people who contribute to society? Or 100 fuckheads who aren't even worth the air they breath? It would depend on who I had to kill, I guess.

I've lost one child to HLHS. There isn't ANYTHING I wouldn't do for my surviving child, law be damned. Should anything happen to her, I'm out anyway. I can't live through that again.

I think killing 100 children to save your own may be a WEE bit of an extreme, over exaggerated example. Most that come to mind would be. Let it be said though that if its your kid versus mine and YOUR kid...or your husband or your friend, or whomever, is putting MY CHILD in danger, as a parent, I will eliminate the danger from my child by any means necessary. I cant even think of an example of why 100 people would have to die to save my child, lest you are talking about some sort of fictionalized speilberg-esque kidnapping, pay the ransom or else we blow up a day care sort of plot. Not likely. So lets debate about something a bit more reasonable.

I'm a 'real' parent, and I realize that you also have to be able to separate from your own emotion and weigh the consequences of your actions. If I saved my child, but killed 100 in the process, what would that say to my child? Everyone else's life is expendable? I'm so selfish I don't care if 100 women feel the intense grief and pain of losing a child as long as I don't? Personally, I don't think that's setting a good example. Are we talking about shooting or stabbing someone who breaks into my home for any reason, or is trying to mortally wound any member of my family? That I would do in a heartbeat. Now if we're talking about stealing food from a grocery store, exploring the black market, or going out of the country for treatment, like Lickity, my answer is hell yes! Of course I would!

I don't know; I think a real parent who cares about their children would kill anybody to save their child. Logic and realism can't beat unconditional love (a term that is immeasurable and inconcievable until you experience it) and desperation. I don't have children, and yet I have no doubt that if and when I become a parent I will do anything...

I really think it depends on the law, and who else I would be hurting. Would you break the law if it meant saving your child's life, but killing 100 others?

The chelating agent I was using was not available in the US (then, not sure about now). I followed the protocol for nearly a year. There was no significant change in behaviors, and no noticeable gains in skills. But at least I tried and don't have to wonder "what if I had just tried".

To me, I cant imagine how this is even a question. I'd do anything, ANYTHING to save my childs life if it were in danger. If that means I spend my remaining days in a jail cell, so be it...I wont miss a wink of sleep. We as parents set aside whats best for ourselves when we conceive. This is a part of it. Sidenote: Lickity split, is chelation just not legal on children? My mother has been chelated several times in the US. I'm genuinely curious.

Yes. When my oldest daughter was first diagnosed with autism I wanted to chelate her (remove the heavy metals from her brain). Not allowed in the US. Had to research online and buy stuff from all over. Used advice from an MD online. When people have nothing left to lose: the law is not a concern.
