Mom Sues Preschool For Failing to Prepare Tot For Ivy League

The preschool brochure may have promised the world, but a New York City mama says it failed to deliver. After spending $19,000 a year for a preschool education, Nicole Imprescia is suing her daughter's Upper East Side nursery school for putting her daughter's future education at risk. According to the lawsuit, at 4-years-old, the tot was forced to learn shapes and colors with younger children, rather than studying for the standardized tests used for private elementary school placement – the thought being that acceptance to an elite NYC elementary school will feed into a top-notch university in the future. The suit seeks a refund for the lil one's tuition and mentions a possible class-action suit on behalf of other parents.

Preschool is meant to be a foundation for a lifetime of learning, but just how much of the future be determined by early education?

I agree with Evie. It depends on what she was promised. The article says she studied shapes & colors with the younger kids... were the kids her age studying for these tests? I guess I see where the mom is coming from if that's the case.

while i understand paying for preschool should provide an education to the child, some of the responsibility is on the parent to ensure the child is learning. some kids need extra time to learn, and need more one on one attention which preschools may not have the ability to provide since there are other students there. part of parenting is educating your children as well.

I think it depends on what the school promised. If it said it would prepare the child for the tests and then didn't, the mother might have a case. It would be the same if you went to school and were promised you would be prepared for an exam, ie you're told the class you're taking is going to ensure you pass the SAT and it obviously does not. Woudn't you expect a refund of your fees? It does sound as if all she wants is the tuition back.

One of the truly sad things about this is that in NYC, getting your child into a highly rated private elementary school (most of which run K-12) does, in fact, greatly raise their chances of getting into an Ivy (this is speaking as someone who has recently been through an Ivy herself). Suing seems a bit crazy, but the primary education situation in NYC, particularly Manhattan, is just downright insane.
