As parents, we painstakingly choose names for our children and hope that they stick. But, in some cases they don't. Destiny Hope Cyrus who is best known as Miley Cyrus and Hannah Montana simplified her identity by legally changing her name. Entertainment Tonight reported:

The 15-year-old, whose birth name was "Destiny Hope Cyrus," tells our JANN CARL that she has always been called "Miley" by family and friends, so she wanted that to be her legal name, and chose "Ray" as her middle name because she wanted the same one as her dad.

my moms name was legally changed from diana to dewah when she was 16, because dewah was all she was ever known by. she didn't even realize her "real" name was diana until she was about 11 or 12 because she was always called dewah growing up. in situations like my mothers, and miley's, i think it's ok...if they've never gone by any other name, and what they go by really is their name except for the legal aspect of it, why not let them change it? i don't agree however if a kid just doesn't like their name, and they're in LOVE with some other random name that they want. i know i used to HATE my name growing up and always said when i was old enough i'd change it to rachel (it's really meredith), but now that i'm older i'd never consider changing it.

It depends on the situation. Random comment aside, when I was younger (say 8 or 9) I wanted so badly to change my name to my favorite name at the time, and tried to convince my parents to do so for me, or else I would when I turned 18 I figured. I'm now nearly 20 and I'm so glad I didn't change my name - I hate the name I was convinced I'd changed it to, and love the name I have. Having said that, there's definitely times where it makes sense, especially if you've only ever been known as something different to your legal name etc. I can see why she changed it.

Some of us like myself think Miley is a good role model not perfect but good enough. Peachykeen19, you are right Dakota Fanning might be the smarter choice, but I my kid did not watch "War of the Worlds" with Tom Cruise or "Hide and Seek" with Robert de Niro. It all comes down to the limits we impose on our children. My child doesn't watch the entertainment channels or go online. I don't think she is ready to go online she still needs to go outside and play. If she decides to spend her hour of TV watching "Hannah Montana" I let her because I hear her laugh instead of cry. She cried when she saw "Charlotte's Web"

My sister was born Anne Elizabeth, but hated it so she wanted to be called just elizabeth. at age 15 she legally changed it. I see nothing wrong with what Miley did. Destiny Hope sounds like a rehab, or a retirement community. As for miley looking like a "child prostitute" i have to agree that she sometimes wears too much makeup but she is a good role model. I told my niece that i liked miley but she wore too much makeup sometimes, (my niece is 10 and loves her) and she agreed, its a good lesson in whats appropriate.

to my children; you don't get to pick your name. i pick your name. when you turn 18 you can go to court to change it, not before :) 2 girls in one of my daughters class have changed their names (at their requests) one is now tessa and one is elizabeth. they were 7 and 8 when they did this. what if they want to change again in a few years? no. you have a name and that's that.

I see nothing wrong with changing your name if you really feel it isn't a part of you. I'd be kind of hurt if my daughter decided to change her name ( I named her after Princess Diana who I really admired) but if she doesn't identify with her name, who am I to expect her to keep it?

Yes Sometimes you Pick a name that means something personally to you and when that child that growing you start calling them other names because of their personality and in Miley's case she was a child that love smiling so they came up with the same and it stuck and she loved it and her family did also and to her growing up it must have sounded more like her name that her real name anyways. Growing up i was called more than one name by my family so i use one of those names all the time and most people don't even know me by my real name so if i was to change it no one might even realize unless they asked.

I wore makeup at 15. I also took some not so innocent pictures. Times have changed, people. Girls find it hard to look up to women like Hillary Clinton because they can't relate. When a girl their age is not publicly smoking, drinking, club-hopping or making out with random boys, I say she's a good girl. I am a parent, and I would much rather have my kids looking up to Miley than Ashley Tisdale who had a nose job. I wouldn't want my girls(I only have a boy right now, but I hope I get a girl!) looking up to a girl who is not happy with the face she was given. Yes, it might be sad that these girls look older than they are, but it's a sign of the times. It's been going on for a long time, too. Remember Tiffany? Now we look back and she looked young, but at the time she did not look her age. And about the name change, I don't see the problem. Her parents gave her the nickname too, and they are obviously okay with it, so why should we worry about it?

Oh yeah, for the record I was kidding about the "kiddie prostitute" thing. I just find it interesting that she's had two sets of quasi (not fully) scandalous pictures come out, she's overly done-up and is often in clothes I would NEVER let my kid leave the house in, and she's been by and large spared scrutiny and is in the "good girl" category. And for the name thing, she's also branded Miley Cyrus (and Hannah Montana), so it makes sense to make that legal.

Nope. Having a name chosen by their own parents is special. I wanted to change my name when i was little, but now I really actually ike my name. Plus I think Destiny is a much prettier name than Miley.

And yea "Destiny Hope" is a wicked cheesy name. What were her parents thinking? Miley suits her better, I generally like that name anyhow...and it's no wonder she prefers it. I would too.

I don't think Miley is any role model at ALL. I think she seems like a fairly good girl, but even though she hasn't had nude pictures of her come out like Vanessa Hudgens doesn't mean she is better. I guess you could say her pictures with her friend were "harmless" but I don't think so...she may not get (or ever) get the negative attention that some other teen stars get I think it's ridiculous to assume she is a great role model at all. I wouldn't want any younger cousin, sister, daughter...whoever...to look up to Miley. She has a cute (depending on your opinion) tween show on Disney - what does she do? Not that you have to be extraordinary but she really isn't. Why not hold up Frida Kahlo, Eleanor Roosevelt, Hillary Clinton, Sheryl Crow, or something? I know Miley is a 15 yr old and not a saint but conform to red carpet standard? I never saw Hailey Mills look like that. Disney boy stars are not decked out in "sexy" or "stripper attire"...they surfer dudes or tomboyish. Think about Dakota Fanning. If you're looking for an actress role model she is at least the smarter choice.

My dad's name is Marlin Dean, but his family has always called him Pete. Most of his documentation is in Pete but everything official is Marlin Dean. It's confusing, but I don't think he ever thought of changing it...it's just part of life and who he is. I always thought that having a stage name kept elements of a celebrity's life private (hmm...alot like the Hannah Montana character..haha). So many of my actor friend's have stage names...so I just wonder why she felt she had to make it legal when she just could've kept it as it is. As someone who has somewhat of a unique name, I embrace it....didn't really like being the only "Geri" in my school when other girls had "cool names" like Tiffany and Heather and I had a faux-boy name..but as I grew up and finished college, I liked my name more and more. I think she's too young to make a change. I mean, she can still have the cute nickname story..
