Medibottle: Kid Friendly or Are You Kidding?

Does a swig of the bottle help the medicine go down? With the onset of cold and flu season, sixty-five percent of you will give your children medicine and trying to get your darling to take his full dose can be a battle. The creators of the Medibottle ($15) have designed a bottle with a syringe attachment that tricks the tot into swallowing meds. The novel approach allows the tyke to take his prescription without ever tasting it.

Fit, My guy absolutely cannot stand eye drops in his eyes. What I do with him is have him close his eyes and I drop them in the corner of his eyes right beside his nose. Then he blinks rapidly and it spreads all over his eyes. Maybe that will help with your girls :)

I thought about this device but the medicine I was giving my son for the GERD separated his formula into two parts. For the first couple of months I had to mix the medicine with a tiny bit of pedialite to get him to take it twice a day. If I didn't do it that way he would push nearly the entire amount out of his mouth which would then make for a miserable 24 hours for him and me. At some point he didn't mind his medicine and even got excited when it was time for it. Tell me that's not a bit concerning :-( Fortunately he is off it now but still gets excited if he sees one of those little droppers. I will have to forever lock up all meds.

I never ever had problems getting my girls to take liquid medicine. The flavors these days are so palatable. Eye drops however are a entirely different matter.

I wouldn't use it because it would administer medicine flavored milk. Then, the baby might assume all milk is gonna taste icky.

What happens if the child absolutely refuses to finish the bottle? Not all the meds will be ingested. And really, does that wretched fake cherry syrup flavor mix that well with milk or formula? Probably not. Why take that chance? It's a GOOD thing that medicine tastes bitter and strong. It keeps kids from thinking it is candy/juice---preventing accidental poisonings. With my kids, I give the medicine first and then offer them a quick "chaser" of juice or milk to wash the taste out of their mouths.

Mine was plenty hungry when I tried it, but he could still taste it. It was awful, we ended up with a bottle and nursing strike because he no longer trusted that his milk would be milk. We also tried it in juice when he was a little older, and that was an even bigger disaster. I say just put a pull in a little roll of ham and rub his throat to make him swallow.

See I think this makes it easier to overdose, since when they spit up it has milk mixed in and makes it look like a lot more. You end up not knowing how much they spit up and how much they kept down. I spent about $12 on it eight years ago and it was the worst $12 I ever spent.

This would be the best $15 dollars ever spent. You have no idea, well I'm sure you guys on lil sugar do, how much and medication can be wasted trying to get babies and little kids to swallow it. And like Greggie said, after a while you become unsure of how much they had. You don't want to accidentally overdose your child. Theoretically amerikanbeanhead a child young enough to take medicine from a bottle wouldn't have access to it anyway. My mom always kept the medication in a locked plastic cabinet, that screwed into the wall, she bought from Home Depot. Another good $15 well spent. My mom wasn't big on baby proofing everything like some parents, but she was always on top of medication.

I remember eating a whole bottle of Flintstone vitamins when I was a kid. I threw up for like 24 hours straight. That was fun.

and its not so much the flavoring, it can be the texture of them when they make the medicine into gumballs, gummies, etc.

One of the kids I work with at the daycare center got used to having gummy bears all the time ( she ate them all the time - so not healthy) Her mom got the vitamins that taste like and have the consistency of gummy bears. Somehow the daughter got into the bottle and ate the whole bottle of the vitamins. eeeepp

Tylenol and Motrin are flavored but still taste like medicine. The prescriptions that add flavors taste much more candyish, in my experience. I never have them add flavor, but most places around here have stopped offering it anyway.

I agree, amerikanbeanhead, but have you tried to find children's medicines (OTC) that aren't flavored? I was all about unflavored stuff for the reasons you mention, but even the Tylenol is flavored, so I gave up. I think you can request prescription stuff to be plain, but I haven't needed to yet.

It is actually kind of dangerous in my opinion- same with making vitamins/medicine look and taste too much like candy They dont recognize it as dangerous beucase it is delivered in a bottle or in an overly sweet candy form

Also, one thing I learned with it (because believe me, I tried EVERYTHING with my first before just giving in and pinning him down) is that it's impossible to match your pressure on the plunger with their suck, which increases their spitting and crying.

I think this is great. When you gave a baby medicine that they don't want, half of it comes back out and all of their chin and shirt. With this medibottle, you can be sure it is all going down.

No. They NEVER drink the whole thing and you're left wondering how much they got in, if any came up with spit up, etc. And saying they can't taste it is a load of crock - put a teaspoon of cold medicine your cup of milk and tell me if you can taste it. Not to mention, then they start refusing the bottle altogether because what they learned is that every once in awhile, their milk tastes like ass. My kids have run the range from easy to unbelievably difficult to give meds to. The best way will always be to not disguise it, just do it.

Unnecessary. Maybe my daughter's an exception but I've never had troubles giving her meds.
