30 Percent of Teen Pregnancies End in Abortion; Is That Surprising?

Not all teens who get pregnant become moms. About 30 percent of young women terminate their pregnancies. Tonight MTV explored the choice in No Easy Decision, a special that followed former 16 and Pregnant couple Markai and James as they made the decision to abort their second unplanned pregnancy. And the program showed how the parents coped with the range of emotions that came with doing so while raising their baby daughter, Za'karia.

I agree with Betty Wayne; I am also surprised that the percentage isn't higher. However, this is devastating to me. I have volunteered at a women's help center for years - we try to help them with money, resources, and even adoption if they choose. Abortion is such a terrible injustice and it almost always hurts and scars both the woman and the father. It's really annoying and angering that parents don't teach and help their children to not become parents before they're ready. No woman (nor man) should have to go through the trauma of becoming a parent before their time, giving up a child for adoption, or the worst travesty in the world, ending their child's life. People need to be smarter about sex, and their parents (as well as society and the media) need to teach responsibilty...

"I just wish birth control was glamorized as much as teen pregnancy is." Agreed. I am surprised, I would have thought the percentage would be higher.

I am ashamed of MTV for making celebrities out of these teenagers getting pregnant! Everytime I see the latest "teen mom" on the cover of a magazine I get so angry. Instead of informing girls about abstinence or birth control (and making that birth control easily available) , the media seems to be celebrating teen pregnancy by making TV stars out of them. Teen pregnancies change,and in some ways ruin, the lives of many. To have a child is probably the biggest decision and responsibility one can have. A teenager, in my opinion, does not have the life experience or the financial or emotional resources needed to raise a child to be an educated, well-rounded individual. I of course am generalizing, as there may be some very mature teens out there, but generally teenagers ar not ready to face life with a baby. I just wish birth control was glamorized as much as teen pregnancy is. Ok, I've said my peace :-)
