Lil Tip: Cookie Dough

A whopping 84 percent of lilsugar readers admitted that they let their lil ones taste cookie, brownie, or cake dough, raw eggs and all. So what's a mama who still has reservations about the threat of salmonella to do? Lickety split offered up a wonderful solution for parents who want to let their children indulge in the gooey goodness without worry. She said:

I set some aside BEFORE I add the eggs. It's funny, growing up the "fun" grandma let me lick the spoon/bowl/whatever and the "not so fun" grandma said it wasn't safe. I just can't bring myself to take the risk, seems like we are always the family that falls into that teeny-tiny percent where something goes wrong.

This is one of the best reasons to be vegan. I will totally let my kids eat cookie dough b/c there will never be any eggs in anything we bake. IMO cookie dough is better than cookies.

People eat raw eggs all the time. My grandmother eats them at least once a day, and we have them every now and then. Our scrambled eggs are very runny, borderline cooked. Try that for weird. Obviously they're local and organic, I wouldn't think of eating a raw non-organic egg. I've seen my grandmother eat raw eggs that weren't organic, she has no clue what a chicken farm looks like this day and age. Washing the eggs like Greggie said is good too!

I actually have a cookie recipe that does not include eggs - believe it. It's from a really old cookbook of mine that I've had since waaay before kids, but it has some of my faves in it. It's called "Healthy Baking" and it was created by Pillsbury. Here's the recipe:Chocolate Chip Yogurt Cookies1/2 cup sugar1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar1/4 cup margarine or butter, softened1/4 cup shortening1/2 cup nonfat plain yogurt1 1/2 tsp vanilla1 3/4 cups all purpose flour1/2 tsp baking soda1/2 tsp salt1/2 cup mini chocolate chips (semi-sweet)Heat oven to 375. In large bowl, beat sugar, brown sugar, margarine and shortening until light and fluffy. Add yogurt and vanilla; blend well. Stir in flour, baking soda and salt; mix well. Stir in chocolate chips. Drop dough by rounded teaspoonsfuls 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets. Makes 3 dozen cookies. If altitude is above 3500 feet: decrease granulated sugar to 1/3 cup, decrease brown sugar to 1/3 cup. Bake as directed above. Let your kids lick away. Enjoy!

I do two things. I test the eggs in water first - if they float or stand on end, I toss them out. And since they're already in water, I wash them then, and wash my hands thoroughly. Salmonella lives on the outside of the shell, not in the egg itself. Although our landlords have chickens, so we often simply use eggs that were just laid that morning.
