Lil Tip: Baby Shower Thank You Notes

Baby showers are getting more and more extravagant. As a guest, you can't just show up with a gift anymore. You are often asked to bring your favorite book, a childhood picture, or a CD for the baby. While trends continue to pop up, the one I like is simple.

The hostess provides cute stationery in tune with the shower's theme for the expectant mother. Each guest fills out an envelope with their name and address so all the mom-to-be has to do is write the thank you note, seal it with a kiss and a stamp. She'll be so grateful for the shortcut.

How tacky! This idea just shows that you don't respect your guests. Thank you cards are suppose to be something the recipient of the gift hand writes to show their appreciation for not only the gift, but the giver. If your going to take this route, you might as well fill envelopes with pre-signed cards and just pass them out at the shower. You'll be able to save on postage too!! Tacky, very tack idea. Let's try showing your guest just how much you truly appreciate the time they took to not only select a gift, wrap it, and to attend the special day.

Sorry - it is wayyyy tacky to ask guests to address their own thank you card envelopes. Very poor taste - and most people would't actually say anything about it at the shower, because that would be in poor taste, too.

I had the guests fill out envelopes at my baby shower. If my friends and family were offended by my "tacky" behavior, they never mentioned it. I heard that some etiquette peeps even say that, nowadays, Mommies-to-be aren't even expected to do thank-yous b/c they have so much on their plates. I'm too busy enjoying Mommie-hood to worry about other people being traumatized by filling out envelopes with their own addresses.

I really love letterpress. I think it's so simple and timeless. My son's announcements were from SoHo Letterpress I felt they were reasonable, they did corresponding thank yous as well! If I was the least bit scanner savvy I would scan to show, they were so sweet (little light blue sailboats with tissue paper lined envelopes and they tipped the sides too...amazing!).

I went to one a couple of months ago and she had about 7 people. She did this thing where you feel out your own envelope with your address on it. I thought it was very impersonal when I received it in the mail. I was like "hey-that's my writing, that's really tacky, I sent myself a card" (that's just how I felt when I saw it in the mailbox ha!) I would rather have it more personal. It's not that hard to put addresses on 7 envelopes!! Now 60 people would be a different story and that is totally understandable. I guess it just depends on the size of the party....

Interesting. Maybe where I'm from, the shower numbers are bigger? I'm not sure as I'm not very experienced with showers or babies. Oops. But my mom attended another shower the day after mine and that one had about 60 people! So I guess I thought 35 (I think it was actually 32) was a good size (and it wasn't held at someone's house). I also had to fly in for the shower since I live out of state from the rest of my family/friends, so we needed to make sure to include everyone. I know some people have several, smaller parties. But yes, I agree that this practice seems tacky. Although, speaking of tacky, the other shower my mom attended had the grandmother passing around a piggy bank asking the guests to all contribute money for the baby. I guess it was funny--everyone was horrified and they only collected $18 from the 60 guests total. HA.

It is pretty tacky to have the guests address their own envelopes. 35 doesn't seem huge to me. It is all relative though.

yeah I only had about 15 also, 35 seems like a huge shower. Congrats though!

I think asking the guests to fill out their own envelope is the height of tacky, personally. If the person throwing the shower wants to help out the guest of honor, she should fill out the envelopes for her, not ask the guests to do it.

I actually heard that it's not proper to have guests fill out their addresses, so I'd probably doublecheck and make sure that the people who show up aren't too ettiquitte concisious? I'm not sure about that, though!

Hmm, I'm actually writing my shower (the most gorgeous, elegant shower ever in my biased opinion! ;)) thank-you notes as I type this, so I feel compelled to respond. I did find coordinating notes, but am not sure I'd feel comfortable asking my guests to fill out their information. It sounds simple enough, but to me it's a tad tacky. My shower wasn't huge (about 35 people), so it really isn't too much extra effort to address the envelopes. The actual handwritten note is where the effort is required. I don't know--it's probably just me, but it seems that the next step would be to have "fill-in-the blank" cards where the guests also fill in the gift they brought. Heh.
