I don't understand how "Yup, we got a good one" is so awful. We usually respond with "Yeah, we think we'll keep him/her." It's not boasting, my kids are charming and cute because of themselves, and I'm proud of that. It's not patting myself on the back.

    Thank you, Greggie!
I was going to say the same thing.
I understand where the Cookie author is coming from with her dislike of smugmoms, but I fail to see how the comment she mentioned "yup, we've got a good one" can be construed as smug.

Thank you is fine, but may come across as dismissive or like taking credit!
I often get compliments on my girls and usually respond with "thank you, it's nice of you to say so" or "thank you, we lucky" or even sometimes (not knowing this was offensive!) "thank you, they are good kids."
    Jeez.

Someone actually just got really pissed at me at CVS when I said "Thank you" in response to her saying what a cute and friendly baby my daughter is.

I'm with Greggie, "We got a good one" is what we usually respond with. And I have seen people get rather upset over the fact that I agree with complimenters. I don't get it!

I understand the concept of finding arrogant moms annoying. I can give plenty of examples of moms who constantly talk about how smart their kids are, who meet every compliment with "Yes, she can even..." and add onto it, or who have to one-up every other child's accomplishment. I just don't get the example used in the article.

Exactly! The article is off base.
You do tend to meet some oddballs in the CVS.
