Head lice can live for up to two days without a host, which makes washing everything your child had contact with an important part of stopping an outbreak within your home. Use the hottest water temperature setting on your washing machine and then dry at the hottest setting until fully dry. If an item cannot be washed, it should be placed in quarantine for a week to prevent the spread of lice. Place the item in a plastic bag and then in a garage or outside where it won't be disturbed.
