Who Helped You Through Labor?

While it is quite common for women to have a doctor help them through the birthing process, many mothers-to-be opt for another approach by hiring a doula, midwife, nurse practitioner or personal coach. Some expectant ladies have a whole team for the delivery.

Aside from your partner, who helped you through your labor?

I had my baby in a hospiıtal in Turkey where husbands are not allowed to participate (unless you use the private health system). I was fine without him though and like I saıd the nurses were fabulous!

I didn't know there were any hospitals who still didn't let husbands in, I thought that practice went out in the 70s. My husband wasn't allowed in for the actual c-section with my first, but only because it was such an emergency that even the medical personnel weren't totally sterile, and my husband didn't even have a chance to get a coverall, much less wash up.

at the hospital I was at my husband wasn't allowed in- so I was on my own. But the nurses were great and so was the doctor. I was really happy with how it all turned out.

my husband, mother-in-law (she filled in for my mom who was on a cruise, my son was 3 weeks earlier than expected), my OB and a wonderful nurse.

Oops. Missed that part. ONLY my husband then- although the nurse helped him out!

It says other than your husband, though. :) I'm assuming that's why he's not an option. I don't know why labor nurse, friend, sister, mother, etc aren't options though.

Husband should have been an option! Mine was better than a doula. I wanted gentle noise, so he talked to me during the whole labor. He daydreamed out loud about who the baby would look like, first laugh, first time to the beach, how our dog would cuddle with the baby. He made labor so much more manageable. I do have to say that we had a great nurse who filled in for my husband so he could make a bathroom trip and get some food. Our doctor didn't make it on time, so an intern actually delivered the baby. Let me just say- not ideal. I like the idea of going to a mid-wife if we get pregnant again, but I really liked just being left alone with my husband.

Just my husband. My labor nurse SUCKED. I can't even express how awful she was, and how much more traumatic she made labor. Even the doctor (who wasn't my regular OB) was rude, condescending, and totally unwilling to listen. Didn't need one with the second two births, but my husband was there for both deliveries.

the picture cracks me up!! :rotfl: my hubby was there with all three kids...but he didn't do much...and of course the doctor...i pretty much labored on my own....i am a silent type....i never made a sound when in labor or asked for anything but drugs when i needed it. so nobody offered to help me breathe thru contractions or offered a back rub or etc...:shrug: finally for the last kid..i had my hubbys good friend in the room with us...he is a EMT...he actually helped quite a bit...and since he was being attentive to me....my hubby finally got the drift and starting being attentive. :) people ask why i would want another man in the delivery room with me.....he is a good friend of both hubby and i....his wife and i are good friends....he was always by my head....didn't venture any further......and honestly...if he did see anything...i don't think i would of cared at that point..:P...i just wanted the baby out!! sorry i wrote such a long post....starbucks! the fingers are flyin! ;)

My doctor was not available when I went into labor but I had an awesome mid-wife. She massaged my legs to relieve the tension and any questions that my husband asked she answered without hesitation. I don't think the doctor would've been that nice.

First off, that picture is ridiculous! I would have kicked my husband in the face if that's what he looked like...same with the nurse, lol. I had a doctor and a doula. Both were fantastic. The doula was only there while I was laboring, not for delivery. Thankfully, the nurse that I had during delivery was an absolute godsend.

For my first I had an OB, that was not available during my delivery so I had to take the doc that was there. Next time I got a mid-wife, and she worked it so she was SURE to be available during my delivery. She was awesome! I still talk to her and she sends gifts to my son every birthday. IF I were having more kids, I'd have her.
