Just a Minute: Groceries

A trip to the grocery store can turn into five or six trips from the car to the kitchen. If you've got small children in tow, the task becomes a timely undertaking so simplify it by asking the clerk to bag the perishables together. That way you can tend to your precious cargo first and leave the nonperishables in the car until later.

Great idea! My hubby and I took turn going to the supermarket so that we don't have to bring our son when he's so small (under 8 months old). Now that he's 2, when I have to bring him to supermarket and back, I usually bring him in first (IF he's asleep), and put him to bed. But if he's not asleep, I let him walk along with me (while I carry the groceries) from the car. He's very easygoing and rarely cries/whines, so I usually get him to play with his Thomas trains in the living room so I can go get the rest of the groceries from the car (if there's anything left).

I'd rather just bring everything in at once. But that is a good idea.

You can get one of those large insulated bags and keep them in your car. When you transfer everything to the trunk, put the perishibles in there and it can buy you some time. I have also debated about what to grab first - the babies or the food. I usually pull my car into the garage, close the garage door (car off, of course) and if the girls are sleeping, I will unload quickly.

Good idea! But you still have to watch how they bag. There's always someone putting the watermelon on top of the bread!

Oh and Nueral - I do the same thing and I debate it myself constantly. I open the door to the car and the house and just do a mad dash to get the groceries in and I try and talk to the baby the whole time. Then when I get in the house I move teh bags from right next to the door and unload.

I kind of do this myself - I make sure then when I am putting the items on the conveyor at the store that the perishables are all together and then when they are bagging them they end up all together. I am really obsessive about this because I actually make sure that all of the items for the bathroom, cleaning, pantry, candy drawer, etc. all get put in the appropriate bag then when unloading at the house - I just take the bag(s) to the appropriate location and I am done!

I used to debate if I should take the baby inside first and let her scream while I brought the groceries in or, if she was asleep in the car, if I should just go ahead and get the groceries in really quick and let her sleep... and hope the neighbors didn't think I was the worst mother ever for letting my child sleep in the car partially unattended!

I think this is a good plan anyway. My parking lot at my dorm was a long uphill walk, so when coming back from the store I would transfer my perishables into just a couple bags so I could just deal with that stuff first.
