Jon and Kate Plus 8: "Beach and Kitchen Reveal"

Last night's episode of Jon and Kate Plus 8 was an example of Kate looking toward the future and making a life for her and the kiddos. The ninesome spent some time soaking up the sun at the beach while Jon stayed back at the Gosselin abode and kept watch on the kitchen renovation. As a mom, I've watched Jon & Kate Plus 8 since the show debuted and before that, I found their specials interesting. I started blogging about them when lil launched because many of our readers like discussing topics relevant to the family or show. The same goes for my coverage of The Duggars. Both shows are on TLC — a channel I watch more as a parent because I don't have to worry about my children being in the room during either of these series. l will continue to review and post on television shows and movies that are relevant to our audience.

SuzieQ, I understand the need for advertising on this site. Previously, posts would have a "sponsored by" up in the corner or the post would make it clear that a certain product (or whatever was being reviewed) had been provided by a company. That is not the case with these Jon and Kate posts. You brought up that lil or baby might just like Jon and Kate +8, but their track record of posts on shows from TLC (The Duggars show, Toddlers and Tiaras, Autism x 6) indicates that they are probably getting paid to write about these shows. As most of Sugar's bloggers have a background in journalism, they should know that it is only ethical to disclose any payments they receive. At the very least, they should address the concerns listed here.

If I were upset about it, I wouldn't be finding it amusing. lol I expect articles sparking debate to not have a bias. At the very least, I expect medical advice articles to be well-researched, but I don't get that here either, so I do my own research and hope others do the same. It's also just as amusing to turn the threads into lilsugar debates and hijack her whole point in the first place. It's so easy.

I guess I just don't expect a blog to maintain neutrality, so the bias isn't unprofessional to me (if this were CNN or the NY Times it would be a different story). Every blog I follow has some sort of bias - I read them because I want the opinions of the writers, not for their objective journalistic content. But hey, you're certainly entitled to your opinions.

OK if anyone is getting upset over a "Kate bias", they seriously need to take a step back and reevaluate things.

Also, the writers here are just as guilty of being "mean-spirited" in conversation threads as any member, including those of us who go Anonymous. And lastly, I understand why they keep posting the threads, people keep replying, including myself. I enjoy repeatedly pointing out the bias. That being said, I have no doubt that even if every thread got no response, it'd take a LONG time for lil and baby to stop extolling the virtues of Kate Gosselin for their own personal pleasure.

I express my discontent by using Anonymous rather than signing into my existing account. You have your way, I have mine. And the bias of lil and babysugar goes beyond Kate, it's just most obvious with Kate. There is little that's neutral, it's pretty much all unprofessional. And seeing that is as amusing as it is unprofessional, so I keep stopping by. Again, you have your way, I have mine.

Maybe that is the actual opinion of the person writing it - it's quite possible that lil or baby (not sure who writes most of the jon/kate stuff) actually likes Kate, or at the least can see how difficult it must be to go through a divorce with 8 kids. Not everything that is written on this site is without bias or written from a neutral standpoint. I think they tend to be open-minded, but not without opinions. For some reason people only seem to notice their bias when it comes to jon and kate stuff. Maybe because it is such a heated topic right now? I guess I just think that if you were to have a problem with them "being a shill for different companies and products" it would be better to express that in a letter to the director of the site or to stop reading the blog, rather than to pick on them in the comments section of every jon and kate post, which is what seems to be happening recently. I'm all for friendly debate and disagreement, but this latest example seems more mean-spirited.

It matters to me (a different Anonymous) because the bias is so clear. Needing ads to survive is totally different from blatantly pushing a show or bowing down to kiss the feet of people. If they were doing it to provide conversation, the articles would be neutral. Instead, everything is always about how awesome and saintly Kate is and how we all have to admit it.

To anonymous - why does it matter if they're getting paid to discuss various topics? Most successful websites need to use advertising in multiple forms in order to pay for the staff it takes to run them. If it weren't for paid ads or product placements on this site, it probably wouldn't be nearly as nice, and they certainly wouldn't be able to get paid for blogging. Besides, lilsugar has been doing these Jon and Kate quizzes for awhile now, probably because their readership watches the show and enjoys the quizzes, not just because they may or may not be getting paid to promote the show.

I saw this article on cnn.com the other day about how nobody trusts mommy bloggers anymore because they are getting paid to shill for different companies and products. It made me think of you, lil.
