TSA Tests Jenna Elfman's Breast Milk: OK or Asinine?

No substance (even a mom's milk) gets waved through airport security these days. Actress Jenna Elfman was traveling with her 4-month-old son, Easton, yesterday when she had to hand over the babe's food. JennaOnPurpose tweeted:

Going thru security at airport & TSA really felt the need to "vapor test" the bottle of breast milk. I mean, is there no common sense left?

As a mom do you think this incident can be chalked up to security regulations or do you think it's ridiculous?

Let's be reasonable--Jihad Jane was ONE blue-eyed blond. Not that it isn't possible, but let's go with numbers here. # of blue-eyed blonds vs. middle eastern ethnicity...that just seems more practical. They strip-searched my best friend's sister--blond haired polish Catholic from Alabama with 2 litle toddlers. Doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me. Israel does it right!

Sorry, but Jihad Jane was a blue-eyed blonde. I wonder if anyone would be horrified if it had been a middle eastern celebrity. These are the times we live in I am afraid.

Simply having a baby doesn't mean that the person with them is good! We have to treat everyone the same otherwise people just take advantage.

I'd rather see most of our "security" measures done away with and bring in security like they have in Israel. Far less invasive and far more effective! The Boston Globe had a great article on it a few years back!

TSA agents aren't given discretion as to who they think is dangerous and who they think is safe -- and it's better that way. I'd rather there be a strict set of rules that apply to everyone than giving TSA agents the ability to decide what to test/ inspect and what to let through.

With women in the Middle East blowing themselves up and sending their kids out with bombs I guess you can never be too safe. When we travelled with infant formula we never had to open it or taste it but than I hear the security is pretty lax at Newark airport.

I'm troubled by the TSA test breastmilk because it exposes it to bacteria. Yes, they wear gloves, but those gloves have touched other things. At least they didn't make her taste it.

My daughter was on formula, and whenever we flew I had the bottles of water ready plus the pre-measured formula powder in one of those containers. One time I had to put a bit of the water from each bottle on my wrists and taste it, plus dip my finger in one thing of the formula and taste it. Another time, the water was vapor tested. Annoying, but if you want to fly, you gotta do what they say!
