Women Didn't Know They Were Pregnant Until Babies Arrived!

Women who have experienced a stereotypical pregnancy complete with morning sickness, weight gain, and exhaustion may have a hard time believing fellow mothers who swear they didn't know they were pregnant until they gave birth. Having watched a few of the I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant segments on the Discovery Health channel, I am convinced it can really happen. Do you know someone who has experienced this phenomenon?

I never thought this could really be possible untill yesterday when I found out one of my friends gave birth to a full term baby boy and had no idea she was preg! She already has a 5 year old and a 11 month old baby, so I guess she conceived almost straight away after having the 11 month old, and therefore wouldnt have noticed as you have a lot of those nice pregnancy symptons like tiredness, sore breasts extra weight etc just after having a baby so you wouldnt neccessarily notice! Its just incredible, what a shocking yet wonderful surprise to have! So yeah, it CAN happen and it DOES happen to real people in real life! Amazing!
I didn't know with my daughter until I was 5mos along. I was sitting in class and I felt a distinct kick to my ribcage. I was starttled to say the least! I was on birth control so I wasn't getting my periods anyway. I had NO swollen breast, I lost weight, and had NO morning sickness AT ALL!!!! She was fine, and thereafter was VERY active!
When you've been told many times that "YOU CANNOT GET PREGNANT" you write off all the signs as something else. The idea of being pregnant doesn't even occur to you. So when it does happen.....there's just no way to explain the feeling. We're just lucky that our little boy is healthy. We couldn't ask for anything more. And I didn't really start showing until about four weeks after I was told (I was told at 26 weeks). Also, you must remember EVERY PREGNANCY IS DIFFERENT.
By the way the doctors check your HcG levels when your pregnant and if you believe you're pregnant. If you don't have these it is IMPOSSIBLE to grow a baby inside you because that means your body doesn't even recognize you have something there and won't feed it. The levels get higher each day, but they are noticeably high after your 4th-6th week of pregnancy (able for at home tests to tell you if you are pregnant)
I don't know if I believe it fully. How can you have a full normal period, no sore breasts (or even you notice them grow?), and a hard stomach. Sure you don't start fully showing until your last trimester. I gained maybe 3 pounds my first trimester and figured I was pregnant with the sore breasts.... I guess it's possible though. Kinda sad though.
i myte b preg took a test - have periods but feeln naseau feel to throw up sleepy n more my friends said i put on some weight dont kno if i'm really preg hopin i am!!!!!!!

this happened to a friend of my mom's. she and her husband were pretty much told they wouldn't be able to have children. then she started to gain weight and was on all these crazy diets and her doctor couldn't find anything wrong with her. just told her that her metabolism was just slowing down. then bam she was in the hospital having a baby! craziest thing. she didn't have any prenatal care nothing. this was seven or eight years ago and he seems like a relatively healthy child.
look it is really possible not to know u are pregnant i am 19 going on 20 next month on October 7Th and a very skinny girl and i have not had a normal period always late and i keep going to doctors and they keep say i am not i take blood and pee test all the time. my body is doing thing i never felt and new things i can not describe to hard to explain. i eat alot more then normal and have swell feet and finger and sick all the time and felt the kicks but its very light and my boob hurt alot but not getting bigger at all and i feel like i am going crazy out my mind. i am not ready for a kid and do not want one right now. but if i am i will take care of it and raise it. i jest don't want my baby taken cuz of no care for her. if i am and one of them girls the gave birth an did not know she was.
i have watched a cople of episodes. i find it interesting because i am going on my forth month late, i have gained 25 pounds, i am not a big girl, 120-125 normaly and i am 5'7. i have done numerous pregnancy tests and i went in for blood work and it has ALL come back negitive. my breasts are getting fuller and my stomache is firm and getting slightly bigger. almost 4 months ago i had a light amount of bleeding, nothing signifigant but i havn't bled since then. after that i started to feel out of place and jst odd, not really myself. i started getting sick when i smelt srtong odors, wether good or bad smelling. and once that started if i had to get sick there was no making it to the bathroom. i was also very tired and slept for over 12 hours at a time. i have went up 3-4 sizes in pants already, and im not getting fat fat because then my arms and legs would be getting bigger to and it is mostly just my breasts, butt and stomach. the doctors told me that i am not pregnant and they tried to put me on birth control. i have never had a child before but if i am not mistaken contraceptives can kill an unborn child. but i would just like to know if this has ever happened to anyone else. im am taking prenatal vitamins because my older sister told me to, rather safe than sorry.
Fo you people who don't think it is possible- alot of these women have PCOS and /or IBS. Those symptoms alone could cause a woman not to know. I didn't think that could be possible until I started getting symptoms of PCOS (Swollen stomach/weight gain, pain, absent periods) and IBS (Bloating, diareah, nausea, stomach is always topsy turvy and could easily be confused with a flipping baby.). Those two combined I probably wouldn't know I was pregnant until I was at least half way through the pregnancy. Right now I am anxiously waiting for my period - I am on day 64. I used to have normal 28 day cycles- now I have 90 day cycles! We are hoping to get pregnant someday, but after a couple years I will probably not wait so anxiously for my period- because of the painful letdown when it does come. You kind of give up after a while of hoping to have a baby. So I would not be shocked if this happened to me someday- I really hope it doesn't, because I don't want to miss being pregnant!
I didn't know I was having a baby till I was 26 weeks! I was 37 years old and my husband and I had two children already (girls) ages 20 & 16. We thought we were done having kids & being I have endometriosis & a bicornuate uterus it was amazing that I had the two that I had! Not to mention we had not used protection in 14+ years, I had no reason to think I'd ever get pregnant again....however....I lost 110lbs and I guess my hormones kicked in and SURPRISE! I honestly thought I had a hernia & when I did feel movement I was told it was just gas. I bought it because I'd never had a hernia before. I went to see my doctor to get a referral to a surgeon and she suggested that I take a pregnancy test..."Yeah okay whatever." I said rolling my eyes. And sure enough....I never thought I'd hear those words again "Your having a baby." I was in shock for a good month! Every feeling came over me! Excited, scared, worry (I'd been taking Vicodin and Tramadol for pain for many years), sadness (I didn't know about the little guy for six months!), Happiness.....Sam is now going to be 8 months old on June 1st and he is a wonderful baby! His sisters are crazy about him. I have to say, this time is way more easy then before. I was one of those who was like "OMG! HOW COULD YOU NOT KNOW WHAT AN IDIOT???" Well, now I know....This CAN happen to anyone.
It's frustrating to see so many people say "I'm pregnant and know about it so how could anyone not know?" as though everyone on earth has to be exactly like you. Most women notice the unmistakable changes, but the changes aren't the same in every case. A woman who is heavy, typically has irregular periods, and whose baby is not very active, could very well not know. Baby movement, if it's not strong, feels like gas or digestive disturbance up until the very end of the pregnancy, and an overweight woman would probably be used to rumblings and not think much of it, especially if she continues to bleed occasionally (which many pregnant women do). If you thought your sexual activity was protected, then there might well be no reason to assume a pregnancy. And since you don't look or feel the way you think pregnant women should look and feel (nauseated and with an obvious bump), why would you think that slight weight gain and light periods meant you were pregnant? Especially if over time you didn't change much, you would have no reason to suspect it. I knew a girl in high school ( a little overweight, of course) whose pregnancy was absolutely invisible, and the delivery of her baby a complete shock to those of us who had seen her every day for nine months. She had had no morning sickness, felt very little movement, saw only a slow increase of 10 pounds in weight (distributed evenly over her body). She knew she had had unprotected sex so she had taken a pregnancy test at the first sign of delay, but she told us that otherwise she might very well not have known. We certainly didn't know. Anyway, the point is, just because something is unlikely and hardly ever happens, doesn't mean it never happens.

pinkprincess - you couldn't have REALLY been getting your period, right? Was it just bleeding? Or was it truly a regular period? How did your doctor explain this as possible to you?And sorry for asking, but are your overweight? I'm truly fascinated b/c I'm 23 weeks and I find it impossible that you would not know. My neighbor didn't know until she was almost 4 months but she's a very big girl who has always had irregular periods. Plus, 4 months IS NOT 9 months!!

I think the whole not having a period thing may tip me off to go to the doctor -- because that's not normal. I don't think something like that can be purely shrugged off. That must be devastating news, though -- you have no idea you're pregnant, and all of the sudden you have a baby. I don't think the average human being would be all happy to have a baby they more than likely didn't want.

I don't think something like that can be purely shrugged off.That must be devastating news, though -- you have no idea you're pregnant, and all of the sudden you have a baby. I don't think the average human being would be all happy to have a baby they more than likely didn't want.

I saw this show -- and I saw that tiny Irish girl, and it showed a picture of her singing on stage when she was pregnant and "didn't know", and I'm sorry, but I could definitely see a very distinct baby belly in that photo, she's just stupid. All the other women were fat, and that's why they couldn't tell.

I saw this show, it was shocking how many people this happens to. Some of the woman didn't gain any weight and they were not big woman and they said they couldn't feel the baby move.

I'm 5 weeks today and I'm so tired I've slept 12 hours straight, my stomach hurts from the stretching, I'm going to the bathroom all the time, my chest is so sore, and I've already got "baby brain," so although I'm sure everyone is different, it just sounds outrageous. And I watched part of this last night as I falling asleep, so I heard how they were explaining everything. It's just craziness.

i gotta watch this show because i too have a really hard time believing that people would not know they were pregnant! my first pregnancy was a surprise and i knew something was wrong with my body within 6 weeks (it wasn't even unusual for me not to get my period because i was training for an Ironman). i went to the doctor and discovered i was pregnant because i thought i was sick...like some other people posted i think you would have to be really out of tune with your body to not notice it. setting my TiVo now...i really have to see this show!

I also watched some of the marathon. It was pretty crazy how many babies plopped in the toilet for the mothers who really did not know until the last minute.
