Approximately one in 20 children have a food allergy of some sort. Since many of these allergies have the potential to be life-threatening, it's important to recognize the early signs and understand what can be done to prevent an allergic reaction.

Like Nancita, I grew into my allergy. For some reason, the females on my mom's side are all allergic to pork (specifically, cured pork...something in the curing process, I guess) and it doesn't really hit until puberty. It's so strange, but every single female has it. What sucks is watching everyone eat honey baked ham during the Holidays. Everything else - bacon, sausage, etc., has a turkey substitute. But there is no substitute for a honey baked ham :(.

i was allergic to tomatoes, caffeine, and chocolate as a baby/small child. fortunately i grew out of them by about 12 years old. had my fill of strawberry-flavored milk/ice cream as a child, though ;)

Not only can kids grow out of food allergies but you can also grow into them. I always had a mild reaction to peanuts, until my 20s, when I suddenly had an anaphylactic reactions. Now I can't eat peanuts but it's sad because I know how delicious they are.

I my self am allergic to seafood. I most be very care when I go out to eat, I must ask if their is any seafood in certain dishes.

Oh that's sad rosadillia. My nephew is allergic to tree nuts but not peanuts. He can eat peanut butter too. Although I don't think he is as allergic as he used to be... he comes to my parents' house all the time and he's around pecan trees but nothing happens... can you have an allergic reaction just by being around the product? The trees drop sap on the cars all the time and he touches the car, I would think that that would possibly be a trigger.... I don't know! lol I know its stated up above that kids don't usually grow out of tree nut allergies, but I think he might have (or might be).

I can say that my nephew is a chronic asthmatic and is allergic to so many foods that I sometimes find it hard to believe. My sister has to take him to an allergist every six months for blood tests to see if any new allergies have developed and which ones he may have outgrown. And on top of that he is lactose intolerant and the only milk he drinks is rice milk. The poor kid has a bright red form taped to his cubby at school listing all the foods he can't eat and an epi pen that he carries and one that the teacher keeps in the classroom.
