How Much of Your Childbirth Costs Were Covered?

Nobody ever said having a baby would be painless or cheap. With doctor and hospital fees increasing, and insurance costs skyrocketing, having a baby is more expensive than ever. Given the state of the economy, many women are reevaluating their decisions to add a child to their families this year.

If you were lucky enough to have health insurance that covered your childbirth costs, what percentage did it pay?

I'm a bit horrified that any woman has to pay for healthcare for childbirth. This just seems morally wrong somehow. like the other two users, I'm Canadian and when I have children it will be 100% covered by the provincial health plans

100%. I believe I paid my usual co-pay the first time I went for a pre-natal visit (when they did the "official" pregnancy test) but after that I didn't pay any co-pays. And I was allowed as many ultrasounds as my doctors wanted. I know a lot of women who are only "allowed" one or two. Which is sad--I had plenty of them! I have very good insurance, paid for by my job, but it's part of my compensation, pat of my salary, if you will. I think my insurance believes that it's cheaper to pay for pre-natal care than to pay for pregnancy or childbirth issues. Got to be cheaper than paying for hospitalized bedrest. The only thing I paid for in the hospital was the TV, and I was in for five days after my C-section. My baby was in the NICU for a month and we didn't pay for any of that, either. Which was my husband's insurance. I'm very happy that my husband and I both have good insurance, we're lucky that we have good jobs that provide it. But it's not fair that other people have no coverage or much less than we do.

I am so excited, my healthcare coverage is transitioning at the start of next month. If we are lucky enough to get pregnant we pay the co-pay to confirm the pregnancy and that is it... everything else is covered through the birth. Woot woot! This is one of the pieces of the puzzle we have been waiting for before we TTC.

We got a HSA plan that covers 100% of preventative care and they considered all my appts. preventative care- no copay. Then they cover my whole hospital bill too. Like Greggie, we shopped and shopped. I am thankful we had the HSA option.

My dad was in the Army, so the Army paid 100% even though I stayed in the hospital for an extra week in Germany.

My husband is in the Army, so we are lucky enough to have 100% of everything paid. Thank goodness for this! We were at the doctor's office 3 times a week!

We have a PPO as my husband is paranoid about HMO's and they only covered 70%. I paid out over $8,000 throughout my pregnancy. It got to the point where I hated to go to the mailbox as I knew there would be a $100 bill here or a $200 bill there. During the same period time my husband had surgery and then was in a car accident a few weeks later. It was a serious year of medical bills.
