How Far Would You Go to Select Your Baby's Gender?

There are near endless myths about ways to determine your baby's sex, but most of you seem skeptical about seriously trying to influence your baby's gender. That's not a universal truth — news from Britain says a growing number of couples are undergoing procedures at clinics overseas to determine the gender of their babies.

BBC recently captured footage of Londoners at a Turkish fertility clinic that guaranteed if pregnancy occurred it would be of the chosen sex. Doctors can determine the sex of a baby using IVF and a type of embryo screening called pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). Sex selection is illegal in Turkey and the UK, so the clinic in question is now under investigation.

Um yeah like greggie said...I'd go as far as my husband and I having sex...after that it's up to chance. That's they way it works.

I don't care about the gender of my future children. The only thing that matters is that they're healthy.

I see this as being a real problem in cultures where having a son is a status symbol...someone to inherit, carry on the name, business, etc.

I imagine there are many people that would do this. For myself I don't have the need to have both genders. I have my two boys and I couldn't be happier. People tease me I should try for a girl, if anything I would prefer another boy if we did have a third. Really, it just doesn't matter that much to me.

I am completely against selecting a gender. It just takes medicine too far, it's not natural. Even if you are already IVF I feel it is wrong to choose the gender.

well, it is legal in US. It is done for "family balancing" purposes or because of medical issues (and, by the way, PGD is legal in UK for medical reasons).

I'd prefer to have boys, if I could choose and the process wasn't overly difficult then yes. Would I not love it if it were a girl, no, but I prefer to have boys cause "girly girls" kind of scare me. If you are already having IVF for fertility reasons, I imagine that this isn't that big of a deal.

See, I always hated it when people asked what I wanted and I said "A girl" and they'd get upset. I'd always wanted a daughter, but would have loved a son just as much. I'd love the opportunity to choose the gender of my child (but I wouldn't go as far as breaking the law) but would still be equally ecstatic if the opposite occurred. My husband feels the same way, and people think we're a little off in this belief. If I'd been given the opportunity to choose the gender of my four children, in order, it would have been girl, boy, boy, girl. I got girl, girl, girl, boy. Doesn't make me any less thrilled! I wanted two of each, we've got three girls and a boy on the way, I'm still in love with every one of them.

Our fertility clinic does offer to put the chosen sex in ONLY if there is an extreme genetic issue, like all females die of breast cancer by 35 or something like that. I will be so happy with whatever gender we are blessed with, but I think it is going to be a girl. All my dreams say girl. But I will not be disappointed if it is a boy, just surprised ...

I think going through that kind of trouble just to select the gender of your child is a flag that maybe you shouldn't be a parent. If gender is THAT important to you, how are you going to feel about and treat a child of the gender you don't want? Not so well, that's how.
