I would let my little one have some sort of contribution to the invites too, either voice recording them saying a few words or maybe just keep it simple and let them have a good time by drawing whatever they want on each invite... just let them play around with it and put some of their creativity on paper. I believe this is a great way to keep your little one entertained and is very important and healthy to encourage some craft activities specially at an early age. Let them have fun!

I recently used Shutterfly to create invitations for my son's 5th birthday party. They turned out amazing! Not your average invitation that will eventually get discarded or put away for keepsake--they're so "frame-able"! And they even sent out the invites to each recipient individually!

I posted jungle invitations, then followed up with emails to make sure everyone got the information. We did a small 1st birthday party, then transitioned to a games night with older children and adults. Little bit went home with the grandparents to give us a break. It was called a "We didn't break the baby" party!"

I use multiple sources. Emails for long distances, created invitations and sent by mail and for old fashioned people I hand carry some. Some people want that personal touch even in our time of technologty.
