Have Your Beer and Drink it, Too

During pregnancy, women often choose to give up things they love — deli meats, goat cheese salads and sushi to name a few. While most mamas-to-be ban alcohol from their prenatal diet, others allow themselves to indulge every now and again.

Enjoying a Dodgers game in L.A., Matthew McConaughey and his baby mama Camila Alves soaked up some sun and sipped on what appears to be a brewsky. Reportedly nearing her due date, I'd say she's safe to have her beer and sip it, too. What's your opinion?

I had a glass of champagne in my 4th mo at my wedding, and a Caipirinha in a Brazilian restraunt in my 8th month for a special night out with the hubby (and was very visably pregnant). Both were ok'd by my doctor and my son turned out just fine. Yes it's a risk and I took it knowing that my doctor gave me the ok. And I don't think I have a problem because I couldn't wait 9mos for a drink. They were special occasions and special circumstances. I would have loved to have someone come up to me and say something at the time. It's a personal decison people need to mind their own business and not be so judgemental. And again we don't know if it's a regular beer, a non-alcoholic version or something else altogether. I orderd non-alcoholic beers at giants games all the time when I was pregnant.

I think it is fine, as a matter of fact my doctor told me I could have a glass of wine a night in my last month. She told me the baby was "cooked" and I should have one to relax...no harm done there.

in my third trimester i had "some of" dh's drinks... if we were having a nice dinner, i'd have some of his wine, or a sip of his beer (altho i didnt really have a "taste" for beer, altho i had a bit of a craving for wine) personally i would have been uncomfortable if i was visibly pregnant... and not because it's dangerous (i think here & there it's not a very big deal, our lil guy is healthy & my delivery was fine) but because of other people looking at you like... how COULD you.

and what if she was just holding HIS beer? Are there pictures of her drinking it? Pictures can be so misleading.

Im surprised so many people are ok with this. I know it's probably fine. A friend had her baby in Germany and her doctor said one glass of wine is a good idea if it will help you relax. Stress is bad for baby too. I know I wouldn't do that though. I'd probably switch to decaf and stay away from chemicals also. Things around us can be more harmful than we realize. I don't NEED the drink.

I see nothing wrong with it. I'll probably do it myself, and I double-dog-dare any stranger in public to say anything about it to my face :-)

I always have a couple small sips from my hubby's beer, and I am 8 mos pregnant right now. I couldn't finish a whole one though. Partly guilt and partly because I start feeling buzzed so quick now, and I don't like the feeling while prego.

Who knows what she's drinking? If it is a beer it's probably not a big deal, but why take the risk?

I wouldn't drink at all. I would feel horrible if anything was wrong with my baby and I chose to do something that wasn't necessary to keep me or my baby alive.

Even if you think it probably won't do any harm, why take the risk? I just don't think a glass of beer is worth the risk of harming a baby. If you can't go 9 months without a drink then you have a problem and you are probably not ready to be a mom. But like others have said, we can't tell for sure if that is real beer.

I don't think it will do her any harm, or the baby. I don't see a problem with her doing it in public too. She's at a ball game, having some quality time with her husband before the baby comes. What better place to have a drink? :)

Since she is from a different country, she prolly has a few different views about things then we do here in the US. But she is the one carrying the baby, and she should be the one making the choices. But I do have to say, I can't wait to see what the baby will look like!!

It is best to hare on the side of caution. This is another life you are taking about. And if something ends up wrong with your baby because you could not give up something that you don't need, then that is careless. Why have a child if you are not going to give them the best shot in the world.

I don't think it's a big deal to have a little sip here and there. I didn't, but if I did, I surely wouldn't do it in public. You never know how people will react. Some people for whatever reason have decided that just about anything you do in public is their business and I could totally see someone causing a huge scene in a situation like this. Rude or whatever, some people don't know how to mind their own business and would be very offended by a pregnant woman drinking........In public at that.

I think it's fine. And for all we know, she has an O'Doul's. A lot of ballparks have it on tap, or you buy a bottle and they put it in a cup since they can't give you the bottle. I don't think it's a big deal either way. I know a lot of women who have wine at their baby shower. I had champagne on my anniversary, with the full knowledge of my doctor.

one beer or glass of wine once in a blue moon during pregnancy is probably not going to do anything. I personally wouldn't do it, but unless you are drinking every day while pregnant I don't see the problem.

While I'm not a mother (and don't think I would take the risk if I was pregnant), I've heard that taken a sip of beer isn't bad and according to GP (Gwyneth Paltrow) it's actually good for mother and baby...at least Guinness!!!

Personally, I don't think it's a big deal to have a glass of wine or a beer now and then, as long as you limit it to one drink every once and awhile. I don't think that the mother's bac would be high enough from one drink to negatively affect the baby.

I disagree. I think it's ok to have a litlle sip sip here and there in your 3rd trimester. I perfer to listen to doctors from Sweeden and Japan. The U.S. infant mortality rate is double to thiers. I think that says a lot.

I'm from brazil and there is an old brazilian myth that sipping on beer once in a while (one beer per week) facilitates milk production and it makes it easier to breastfeed. But i don't think people do that anymore.
