Do You Believe That Divorce Runs in Families?

Like parent, like child? If a kid grows up in a broken home, will she be more likely to head to splitsville if (or after) she marries? If a youngster's mom and dad are wed, will her own marriage last just as long? Today People reported that Karenna Gore Schiff and her husband Andrew are separated. This is hot on the heels of her parents, Al and Tipper's announcement that they were parting ways. Karenna's younger sister Kristen finalized her divorce from Paul Cusack last year. Do you think breakups in families are a result of influence or coincidence?

I find that to be an excuse. If I saw my parents fighting, I tend to know that's not how I want to live my life with my SO. So I choose to try not fighting, and I feel that I would also try to avoid situations leading to divorce. Maybe it's not the same for other's, but it's not like a genetic disease. It's an action brought about by a series of choices and mistakes that no one can make but you and your spouse.

You get your models for relationships from your parents, usually. If your parents had an unhealthy relationship, you are more likely yo have one yourself, and therefore are more likely to divorce.

I don't think divorce has been acceptable and happening for enough generations to really know. Although, things that your parents do, seem to be executable to there children.

Children obviously learn how to have relationships from the relationships they're exposed to. So if all they see are dysfunctional marriages, they're probably more likely to have a similar relationship. Just like kids who grow up in abusive households are more likely to be in abusive relationships as adults. You tend to emulate what you know.

I think there is an element of influence when it comes to actually divorcing (seeing it's okay, knowing the process, not feeling the need to try at making it work because you know others in your family will accept your choice etc.), but I also think that children learn a lot from their parents, so if your parents made a bad choice in partner, or they have a bad relationship due to poor communication etc. that is learned, and therefore their bad habits could be passed on to the next generation of relationships. Therefore it's not the divorce that might run in the family, but the poor relationships which lead to divorce might run in the family.

I can't speak for other peoples' family situations except mine... Having done an extensive family tree tracing back 6 generations on my mother's side & 9 generations on my fathers, there's only been 2 divorces. - The only thing separating any of the marriages was death: from accidents, old age, war, etc. I had relatives average 30+ years of marriage before old age took 1 & the husband/wife living their years after as widowers/widows - Of course there were remarriages but never from divorce.
