What Do You Know About Gestational Diabetes?

There is nothing sweet about gestational diabetes. The condition can be scary for an expecting mama, especially after hearing tales of large babies as a result of the condition. A worried mum-to-be can rest easy knowing that having diabetes while pregnant is not usually harmful as long as it's kept under control. Take the test to see how well you know gestational diabetes.

It was diet controlled, yes. And I had it with my first two, not the other three. I weighed less by the time I got pregnant with my third, which likely was the biggest factor in why I had it the first two and not after. I also was much more active in those pregnancies. After having it with my first though, I had to test at the beginning of pregnancy and then three more times throughout pregnancy, just to be safe. In your case it sounds more like it increases with pregnancy, which would mean you'd likely have it with subsequent pregnancies as well.

Ok, I have a question for you off the subject of the quiz...were you able to control it with your diet the 2 times you had it? How were you able to not have it with the other 3 babies? I plan on having one more baby after this one and I would really love to not have to deal with this. I was able to control my first one with diet but this one I am having to use insulin and it has been very tough. I work out and watch my diet but nothing has helped this time around. I hope you don't mind me asking.

Yes, I had it with 2 of my 5 children and checking their sugar was always a priority. Like I said, it may not increase their risk of ongoing diabetes, but at birth they can still have trouble processing it.

Have you had GD? I am on my 2nd pregnancy with it and all of my doctors have said that it will not put my baby at risk of being diabetic. Yes, their blood sugar is tested but it is just a routine procedure.

Gestational diabetes DOES put your baby at risk for being diabetic at birth, and unable to process sugars. Their blood sugar should be tested the first few days to be sure it's not high. It may not increase their chances of developing full blown diabetes, but the answer to #4 is still yes, they do have an increased risk at birth. Also, weight gain alone may not increase chances, but that wasn't the question. All of the answers increase your chances, depending on the combination.
