The Top Five Gender Myths

The second you start showing, random people offer their unsolicited opinions on what the baby's sex will be. I couldn't put the kibosh on the predictions, since I didn't know the sex until I delivered. Sometimes it was fun to hear people take a gander, but often it was bizarre and unwelcome.

Let's see if you know these common myths for gender guessing.

5/5 :) I don't know how true they are, but when my mom was pregnant with me, she carried me up high and when she was pregnant with my brother, she carried him very low.

Hahaha these were so true with my boys, and true with the people I have seen who have had girls. I guess they're the majority but not absolute.

I didn't find out until my son was born so everyone I knew and even those I didn't were always offering up their theories. It was kinda fun.

haha. All five of these myths have come into conversation at work with my friend who is expecting. It's hilarious.

Some of the tales do have some basis in reality, they're just nowhere near foolproof. Like a girl is likely to be carried higher because the female sperm live longer, resulting in a later conception. But that certainly doesn't mean a boy can't be carried high. And the female heartrate on average is faster, but again not a guarantee. My boys were both in the 160s and my girl in the 130s. I did have a lot of the girl tales this last time. I was sicker a lot longer, my nose didn't spread, I carried her really high, etc. But I was stil convinced she was a boy until they pulled her out. *lol*

I live in SF where the asian population is high and it seemed that they all had there own way of predicting the gender of my baby. I knew I was having a girl so often they would look at me a claim, ah that is a boy, and I could smile and politely say, no it's a girl. I also carried her extremely low, constantly throwing people off.

I have always heard the ring thing the same way as kikidawn--over the belly with a wedding ring. Re: the heart rate--with my current pregnancy even my nurse/midwife and OB/gyn have listened to the fst haeart rate and said "sounds like a girl"!

I have also heard that more severe morning sickness signals a girl baby on the way.

5/5!! I'm pretty surprised. I was sure that I was going to miss two of them. The necklace prediction I had always heard like this: Use a ring on a string over the pregnant belly (instead of the hand). And the ring was supposed to be your wedding ring. I had one of my sister's friends tell me she was pregnant the other day. I, of course, asked her what she was having :) She said she didn't know yet, but the heart rate was fast and so that signals a girl... I just kind of sighed and shook my head. She's only 17 so I guess she didn't realize that you can't actually tell that way.
